Unfortunately you are right, the squirrels got the peanut butter before the woodpeckers did, so might get a cheap jar of chunky and do it again, although I don't want to attract the squirrels. They licked it right out of the tree, I could not get to the cracks where they could not reach, I might try again though. Mama and Papa rb wp have been spending a lot of time in our Cottonwood tree, I heard a lot of racket in the tree in the neighbor's tree and the mama was protecting (the nest) I think against another kind of bird, heard the pileated but did not go after him, I thought I might give him and my legs a rest and not try to find him every time I hear him, I did see him earlier today but had no camera and he was too far away.

LOL with you Burn, that Rrown-headed Cowbird sure looks thoughtful. lol Warm thought sending your way for winter to be a thing of the past soon.
Wow I love seeing all those Redpoll's!! That feeder shot is insane. Thanks Burn!
At Supper last night, it looked like this.
Weird weather! There you are at 47°N with snow, and I'm at 55°N and basking in 20° heat - warmest spring here in decades, the temperature's even been above the July average!

Oh, so THAT's where our spring warmth went! Give some back!!!
Swallow-tailed Kite in Cape May yesterday.
Who ever said the starlings and sparrows would not eat out of the upside down feeder were wrong, I go out to the entryway and pull back the curtain and there are the sparrows fighting to get on the feeder. I think we may have to stop feeding the suet cake in the summer, the all season cakes are just too expensive. I'm going to hate that because I love to watch the woodpeckers while they eat. The peanut butter on the tree didn't work too good, the squirrels got to it before the woodpeckers did, but I just looked out and I must have gooten some further in the cracks, because mama and papa rb wp are on the tree and they are going crazy eating the peanut butter. I am going to have to find some way to get it further in the cracks so the squirrels can't eat all of it. Got a great pic for you. Mama and Papa and a Downy all in one shot!
Burn, both unbelievable pictures, really beautiful and unbelievable that you have snow. We've had record breaking heat -- 90s in April.
Finally had an Indigo Bunting visit the yard this morning. He was eating seeds from one of the few weeds that I usually pull up. Guess I'm going to have to let that ugly grass grow! Tried to get a pic of him pulling the seed down. This was the least blurry. He was very busy jumping for it.
OK, just another house sparrow. I went to put him in the same bag as the other four that I pulled out of the pond yesterday and discovered that some animal had carried the bag back over the fence, ripped it open and there was no sign of a single baby bird. I hope whatever brought it back over the fence ate them all and didn't leave any that my dogs may have found. Hope it was a possum, but probably just a squirrel.
My hubby got a real treat today he saw a Northern Flicker on our upside down feeder, unflortunately he did not have a camera and by the time he could have gotten one, he took off, I say he because hubby did not see any red on the head. I just replaced the suet cake, the one before that was a berry one and the new one is a sunflower blend, I am pretty sure I am going to quit feeding suet in the summer, I still have seed so that is what they will get. I know they like that because I have seen mama and papa rb eating off of it. By the way VA_Wild Rose, good shot of the rb, he really is silouetted against the sky. Happy Easter to all.
I haven't been able to get this thread to load completely for me. Many of the photos are missing but the ones I can see are wonderful!
Yippies! Zone 7a-b, we've babies, babies ducklings and Canadian Goslings. Woohooo! Wild Rose terrific pics. with the new lens, love the Green Heron, glad it's back for you. Nan, I'd like to have one of your Pileated wps please. LOL, the squirrel is pretty sneaky isn't it?
Thanks everyone.
WR, beautiful bird shots!!!
Elphaba, that's awfully sad, what the Grackles do with the baby birds. Hopefully, they leave the Bunting babies alone.
Teddy,so neat, your hubby seen the Flicker on the suet. Hope you get a chance to see it again. Cool shot of the 3 Woodpeckers.
Bet that squirrel couldn't wait for the Pileated to take off, Nanny.
Funny heron shot Lily, you'll have to come up with a caption for that one.;)
Red, those 2 shots really turned out well, I can see why, your going to like it. I would too.
reddirtretiree... that 7D is on my wishlist! Enjoy!
Lily... I have seen our GBH do the same thing! It is a strange pose, and I am not sure of the reason!
