Onion bub planting

North Palm Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I am a weekend gardener that's been doing it for a couple of seasons now in south Florida. I have had some success but I have a whole lot to learn. I had some old onions in my kitchen, for cooking obviously, and they started sprouting leaves so I decided to stick them in my garden and see what happens. They have started growing more leaves and seem to be taking root. I was wondering what will happen, will they multiply and grow new onions, or just grow leaves and that's it? Do they get flowers? Any info would be much appreciated.

I haven't tried regular onions. I do plant plant green onions from the grocery store. They keep producing new leaves, and I harvest a leaf or two when I have the need. And, the green onions planted last year flowered the prettiest white flower this year in early spring -- looked like one of those Alliums, almost 3" across, and lasting a long time. It is not as pretty today, as in the photo I just snapped. Go ahead and plant your onion. Experimenting is part of gardening fun.

I did the same thing with my sweet onion. Only i kept it in my kitchen until the leaves were over a foot long (and the bulb looked desicated). I couldnt bear to part with my experiment so plopped it in some dirt. Now after three weeks in the dirt - and some "playtime" with my 3 yr old budding gardener - it looks like the top of the bulb is splitting into 2 parts and it has double the leaves. Fun! I know a lot of onion get blooms like dirt-diggers, some are more purple.

I would love to hear about what happens with your onion!
