pruning a pear tree!

Albany, NY(Zone 5a)

we just moved into my fiance's grandmothers old house, which has been in the family since 1937, at some point a pear tree was planted. i have no clue what type it is, and plan to post some pictures in the ID forum once it begins to flower. it bears fruit every year, but the pears are very tough. does anyone know if pruning will help? this tree is HUGE! way more pears than we'd ever know what to do with, so i plan to prune anyway. i'm thinking the only way these will be edible is canned, or baked. whenr the best time to prune? helpful tips for fertilizing and growing good fruit? any fruit tree input would be greatly appreciated.

They may just not be ripe. Take a look at this site. http://gardening.wsu.edu/library/tree003/tree003.htm It explains some about picking pears.

The tree may be something that grew from a seedling and therefore isn't any variety.

Pruning should give you more of them and larger pears, but I don't think it will make them softer or sweeter.

thanks for the link. this helps alot, since i hope to can some pears this year, and give lots away. :) i guess i won't prune this year, maybe next, just to keep the air circulation in the tree. so many buds today! it's really coming to life. so ready for spring.
