Hi I started my plants way to early last year anyone have a rule of thumb for planting seeds like vegetables and flowers???
Planting seeds for transplant???
I'm moving this thread over to Garden Talk where it'll be seen by gardeners. :)
How early did you plant?
This varies, Tom, by species.
Most germination instructions come with directions for this. Look for the part that says something on the order of: "start seeds in flats X weeks before last frost date."
Look up the last frost date for your Zone (www.victoryseeds.com/frost/index.html). Then back off.
So, for example, let's say your last frost date is May 1, and you are growing tomatoes. For 'maters, you plant six to eight weeks before the last frost. Backing off from May 1, you would want to start them from about March 6 to March 20.
You might check with local nurseries and seed houses, too. Many of them distribute planting guides for their area. For instance, I get a chart from Fayette Seed, in Lexington, that tells me when to plant most common veggies.
