My corn plants have been cut and removed by what??

My garden is completely enclosed and yet something is getting in and destroying my corn plants. They reached about a foot high until it looks like someone took a knife and cut them level with the ground. Leaves are gone, no footprints and can't find any holes. Ideas? Closest I can think is a rabbit, but again, can't find any holes! Any ideas of what it can be and how to get rid of it organically are welcome. Also, will the stubs grow back to full plants? Thank you in advance!

A possum, raccoon, or groundhog can climb over a fence. Don't know what kind of enclosure you have.

It's enclosed all the way around and I have a net covering it. Here's a photo. The fence itself is about 4 feet high. The net covering it is tied every 1-2 feet, they overlap but when it's windy sometimes the openings between billow open. The fence itself, and especially the covering, can't hold any real weight, so I imagine they'd fall in and leave evidence of that, if not get trapped inside altogether. I've moved logs around the sides since the last incident hoping it will further deter them, whatever 'them' is. Seems like they wait for my corn plants to reach a nice healthy 12" tall before eating them as the shorter ones are left alone so far...Hope this helps.

It sounds like a gopher which digs underground.

If you have a friend that's a hunter mount an infrared game-hunter camera and see if anything is getting inside the enclosure.

I had the same problem with rabbits eating my red corn down to the ground. It would grow back and they would eat it down again. I finally bought a pellet rifle from Cabelas and took out all 5 adults in 2 minutes at dusk(w/ my valid hunting license). I got one of the 2 juveniles the next morning and since then my corn is starting to grow back. The one little rabbit left managed to eat all 3 of my small Kawano plants but it'll slip sooner or later and end up in the crock pot.

I think its squirrels.

I first fenced my garden with 2" x 4" wire mesh fencing like you've got. Much to my surprise, I found that young rabbits can run through it without even slowing down. I then added chicken wire to the bottom of the fence, all around, and that stopped the rabbits.

I know you've got some small-diameter mesh there as well, but if the rabbits can find a little hole it doesn't cover they can go through the wire fence.

Actually, I've got two GATES, both covered in fine-mesh chicken wire. The gate in the west end of the garden fence is 4' wide, for me, the wheelbarrow, the tiller, etc. The gate in the east end fence is 8' wide and I seldom open it - it's so I can get the tractor in to plow when the growing season is over.

I meant Novisgrdnr. She said her fence is 4 ft high and the photo shows the netting spanning at the same height. We have an enclosure that high for animals and we have to do a Quasimoto thing going in there.
