Things that make you go "hmmmm" or Say what???!!!! PT2

Google does the auto complete also. Sometimes they are hilarious.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Just looking through the JJill catalogue and a few others...how come the larger sizes are 10 bucks more than the " regular" but the petite cost no less than the other two? If I wore the larger sizes, I'd ban those brands/ catalogues fro the house.

East Bridgewater, MA

A "captive client" because they don't sell extreme sizes of either end of the range in stores, so there are no other options.

Once upon the time, in the 1960's, Howard Johnson's Restaurants were the only option for drivers on New England highways.

A "captive customer" is not the same as a "captivated audience"; but I digress.

(I really miss Howard Johnson's, **sniffle**)

You have a point.....

Free coffee?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I've been to HoJo 3x in my lifetime, never cared for them. Prefer Denny's.
- More often than not I'd just drive 10 min or so into town and go to a good restaurant, (the ones with Caddys and Mercedes parked outside..), and get a great meal for less than lunch would cost in NYC.

East Bridgewater, MA

I remember someone telling me, a few decades ago, that the best breakfast joints would have pick-up trucks (with the company name on the side) parked outside. Those guys generally knew the best places to chow down at 6 am.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Unfortunately many of them are into volume for the buck instead of quality..

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yeah - haven't exactly seen the 'Truck Driver's Guide to Great Cuisine' roaring up the NYT best-seller list. But maybe we will.

East Bridgewater, MA

And the cheaper the place, the more they overload the carbs: extra toast, lots of hash browns (potatoes).

East Bridgewater, MA

The best breakfast I ever had on the road was in the 1980's, I think it was Ohio, and I didn't have a clue what was around.

I followed a few cars that were turning into a large, diner-style place, and I followed a few steps behind a well-dressed businessman, who greeted the waitress by name--obviously a regular customer. It was a lunch counter set-up, with those round, spinning stools.

He said,"Do you have any leftover soup?"

The waitress said, "Sure, vegetable beef."

The man said, "I'll take a big bowl of that, plus two eggs on whole wheat toast."

I chimed in, "I'll have the exact same thing!"

The soup gave a nice, long abatement to hunger on the road, and I skipped lunch completely.

Thomaston, CT

Love soup, but must admit, I've never had it for breakfast.....I tend to stay away from chains, although I do like Bertucci's....but the best places to eat around here are not the ones with the 4 stars...good food, but beaucoup bucks...but, the small, family owned ones...homemade, fresh ingredients, reasonable prices.....

East Bridgewater, MA

Family-owned usually means top quality, because their family name is on the line...corporations only care about the bottom line.

(The reason I'm inside on this beautiful day is because the Red Sox are on !)

Thomaston, CT

I just walked the dogs 2 miles....Mets are on tonight.....

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I ate in a family owned restaurant in Illinois which served the worse dinner that I ever had to date.
On the other hand I ate in a family owned restaurant in Wyoming which was the best dinner I ever had.
- both about the same price.

- go figure.

Hallowell, ME

Local place called Dave's Diner has an excellent breakfast. I also like to go to Denny's and the Crackerbarrel. Favorite breakfast is biscuits and gravy with a side of either sausage or bacon. Used to make it for the kids back in the day but back then I wasn't too aware of cholesterol. Of course I fixed it the good old (fatty) southern way!!!!!

Thomaston, CT

Tastes better that way!

Why is it that you go shopping somewhere and the very next day you get coupons in the mail for that store???

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

was just at my sisters and that happened to her too

This is how our Government Spends our money. Where is the reject pen. This is the most ridiculous pork barrell going yet.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Even worse, Jen, is when you buy something at the supermarket and at checkout they print out and give you a coupon for something you just bought. Just take it off the bill!

Thomaston, CT

I agree, Sherrie...some studies are just ridiculous.....Victor, I never use coupons, & hate that the paper is wasted on me.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That drives me nuts, Victor!!!!!

Seen anything about that extreme couponing?

East Bridgewater, MA

I've seen the "Extreme Couponing"; but it takes amazing organizational skills, and lots of "free" time.

If you have Comcast Cable, there are currently episodes to see for free ("On Demand").

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm thinking though, that they buy stuff they really don't need for the sake of a bargain. Who needs 50 tubes of toothpaste?

East Bridgewater, MA

Or 80 sticks of deoderant, every 6 weeks ?

But I do admire the guy that buys all that food for the homeless/needy, even though he was a bit "preachy"; his heart was in the right place.

He gives it to homeless shelters, which is admirable.....but I don't think I want him as my next-door neighbor, he was a bit too chatty !

Who would want to store 50 tubes of toothpaste?

Today is going to be a day and a 1/2

Way back in these posts: I miss HoJo's peppermint stick ice cream!

In the supermarket up here you get your total and sign the check. They then put it into the cash register and it prints out the total. They show it to you and asks - Is this right? I looked at the check and said

Georgous - The cashire and 2 other people bursted out laughing. I am now wondering what they were thinking?

Cave Creek, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yes Iris, I worked at HoJo's through HS and college back in the day...they also had the best butter pecan. Talk about a mismanaged corporation...had the monopoly basically on the highways and decided to seek their fortune in hotels...now they are not even a 'player' in either. One generation passes the torch to another in a family and the light goes out! :)

East Bridgewater, MA

HoJo's also had the best hot dogs, and the ice cream was definately great.

I now purchase peppermint stick ice cream at the supermarket (Christmas time), but none of them measure up.

I bet that they use HoJo's as an example of bad decision-making at Business Schools.

Older you get the hotter you can stand water

Waiting for hubby and daughter to come out of Petsmart...watched a lady back out of her spot and then sit in her car blocking the aisle while she put makeup on. Why didn't she just STAY IN HER PARKING SPOT????? What is WRONG with people??????????????
