troubles with an armadillo

Debary, FL

Does anybody have any ideas how to get rid of a pesky armadillo? I have earthworms (or had) in my garden it has eaten them all and uproots my plants in the process. Our cold winter in Florida seems to have killed a lot of the worms also. I raise worms in old washtubs, but that doesn't do any good it they are in there and not in my garden. And I cannot fertilize with the worm made compost because of little baby worms and eggs that will hatch. The armadillo would be even more active. The only other thing I can do is put a cage of some sort around the plants. I'm sure a fenced in garden would cure the problem but my garden is approximately 250-300 square feet and a fence like that would that would probably be expensive.

Any ideas? Please help.

Electric fencing should help and is cheaper than regular fencing. The way armadillos move it would be likely that they would touch their nose to the fence first which would shock it. A time or two of that type of greeting should convince him/her to shop elsewhere for worms.

"Somethig" is eating the bark on my new, beautiful Bloodgood maple - at night. What should I do?

Would pepper spray hurt my bloodgood maple. Some rodent (?) is eating the leaves.
Thanks

You can take poultry wire and make a "cage" around the bloodgood's trunk....that will stop the damage if the culprit it a rabbit. Also look at the link in the above post...they make repellents for rodents also.

A .22 would get rid of it. I think I am going to have to load the rifle and stay up waiting for them to appear. They even come up on my porch and dig in the flower pots. They sure do stink. There is no law against shooting them as they are a nusience pest. Luciee

How do I identify the beast that's eating in my garden? - short of staying up all night.......................

Hire someone else to stay up all night...(sorry, I couldn't resist) I would head out to your local big box store and purchase some Bayer Select for trees. It is a systemic poison so it should kill any beetles, borers, caterpillars and the like. as for rabbit and squirrel damage, I would look into one of the repellents sold expressly for them and again use metal hardware cloth to make a protective ring around the trunk.

Thank you all. The hardware cloth works great. Now if I could just get a dimmer for the sun.

We hear ya and agree...LOL. Glad the h/w cloth is doing the job.
