You had a nice assortment Viceroy, good to see you sharing pics again. Have Brazillian verbena will attract butterflies! I love the Queen and BST too. What is the white plant the first skipper is on?

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Lovely pictures all.

Viceroy, I recognized the lantana, what are the other plants they are on?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Viceroy! I say this lovingly, you are a show off!!! Wow, glad to see a good variety.

I planted the Brazilian verbena this year. It has just started blooming. Hope it sends out more shoots though!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

jnorth I think that first pic could be a Tersa sphinx moth insead of a HB moth. See what you think... http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/1429/
Penta is one of their host plants.

Kissimmee, FL

Flattery will get you no where Mrs_Ed. (lol) I have not been able to share pics for a bit, just got my computer back. The verbena does real good, it seeds nicely I have to pull it sometimes!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You might try pinching the verbena back a bit at first Marna. It is so tall it flops a lot.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Whoa! Viceroy so many pretty butterflies! Welcome back. J. Awww, I've some Pentas over here, please send me those Tersas. Beautiful all!

East Dover, VT(Zone 4b)

Wonderful pictures all. I'm a newbie so I just have this plain old 5 inch moth to share....

He's a polyphemus moth and he was kind enough to pose for two pictures.

Welcome okcrow, such a nice find with that Polyphemus moth.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

I love those moths okcrow.

I found one that was dead, but the wings were open. I put it in my freezer and am going to mount it in a shadow box. They are so pretty.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Nice of the Poly to pose for you! Welcome OKCrow!

I got a treat today in the hot sun. Saw two BSTs or so I thought. I never looked that closely until I was editing the pictures. They were flapping and I was sweating. It is a Pipevine on the top and Black ST on the bottom of my Carolina Phlox.

Another...dorsal side this time.

Also I was showing Catzgalore my tall bronze fennel today and everywhere I looked are first and second instar BST cats. Going to bring them in when it is cooler in the morning. Switching some of them over to the parsley also.

Wrong pic....this one is better of the Pipevine. Anyone know for sure if this is a female? The blue isn't as dark as some I have seen, so I am hopeful.

Sheila, I think the white flower, in Viseroy's pic is a yarrow( Achillea millefolium).

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

That's it. I knew it looked familiar. Thanks burn.

East Dover, VT(Zone 4b)

Glad you liked my moth. I thought is was a leaf until he opened his wings! This thread looks like it can provide an education on butterflies:-) I'll have more (barring serendipity) once my coneflowers get big enough to bloom and, of course, when the milkweed heads up.

Sheila,

Here is a female Pipevine that recently visited my pipevine plant. I don't think there is a bit of blue on the back of this female. Had my first Pipevine release two days ago and have approx 25 in my bf cage in chrysalides. This is my first time raising these little guys.

Looks like things are really starting to heat up!

Sheila, about the verbena… yesterday I was at the place where I purchased it and got a good look at some older plants and see how they grow. Mine has yet to send the side shoots. So I feel better. And Viceroy, I planted it in a place where I have lots of reseeding going on, so I'm hoping I will have it now forever.

Kissimmee, FL

Shiela that plant is a yarrow,Burn nailed it. Good luck with your reseeding project Mrs Ed.

Winter Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

Wow some really great pictures and helped me to ID some of my butterflies. Viceroy you take some really great pics. Here is a monarch on a milkweed Memorial day weekend.

Nice sunkissed! I am not positive but the female Monarch may have been laying eggs in that first shot. Keep an eye out you may have cats munching soon.

I promise to keep you guys going during the winter if you forgive my absence in the summer. It's just too darn hot outside and I don't like sweating. Not just normal sweat, like, I could water the plants with my sweat because it's so hot outside. We've had several Giant ST sightings in the yard so I should probably go check the rue. The Gulf Frits have a permanent presence on the passifloras. I'll be going back up to WV in a few weeks so hopefully the cooler weather will encourage me to run around chasing butterflies. If nothing else, I'll go hang out at the Lowe's garden center and take pics, LOL! They're always good for some Silver Spotted Skippers and the occasional Swallowtail.

True about the heat, the butterflies seem to like the hottest part of the day, just twenty minutes out there trying to capture a picture, you need a shower again. So I sit in my air conditioned Florida room and watch them flutter around.
I was at Lowe's last week and birds were inside the store by the birdseed section...wonder how they got in and wonder how they get them back outside again?

Gulf Frit on Penta last June...only seen a few this year on my passion vine. Did see a cat already on them though.

Sunkissed you take great pics, your Monarch is awesome. What kind of activity have you been getting in Winter springs?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Melanie, it's nice to see you posting. J. and sunkissed I'm so ready for those Friterliaries, please send some my way.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)
