several weeks ago i bought some bareroot hostas (aureomarinata) and after researching online, but not yet knowing of this site i realized there are a million different ways to start them, so i chose what seemed to be the best and most common techniques. there were conflicting instructions about soaking the root, and for how long, so i went with 1 hour, in luke warm water, with a little liquid fertilizer. then i untangled the root gently and spread it in the pot over a mound of dirt. i covered it with soil, and then about 1 inch above the eye of the root. the pot is well drained but stays moist. i'm in zone 5a so after initial potting it stayed indoors until about this last 10 days or so when it's warm enough to be out all day, and occasionally over night. 3 weeks in the dirt and no sign of growth. how long do these generally take to grow, and what's the best technique? i bought these roots from dollar general of all places and the back of the package has very generic bulb planting instructions, hence my confusion. thanks in advance for any info, advice, or deepest sympathy. lol
starting bareroot hostas...
OutlawHeart Hosta is one of the easiest plants to grow. You can chop and dig to get a little root and just stick it in the ground and it will come up in the spring. I never fuss with mine and they perform every year bigger and better. They aren't even fussy about the soil you put them in but do like parital shade to show off.
ok! awesome! so i'll just leave them be and keep my fingers crossed. :) i have never raised them from root, but at the price i figured i'd take my chances. ;) my yard is sooooo shady. good thing i LOVE hostas. can't wait to start a beautiful shade garden in my new home.
I am in zone 5 and the hosta hasn't even started to show this year. Flower_delight is right hosta can handle just about anything. I call it hostile hosta (even though I love it)
Last year by this time of year I had the garden plowed. It's now very close to May 1st and it's just 2 wet. The lack of sun is just driving me nuts. The last 3 years has been one of the worst runs ever.
i woke up to SNOW yesterday! whaaaa!!! global warming? where?! lol supposed to be almost 80 this week one day though... of course it's also supposed to pour all that day too. maybe we'll just skip spring this year?
You folks in Ny just can't get a break this year. Hang on buddys it will get there. It's been a roller coaster here the last month. Cold two days and warm three. Put my tomatoe plants and seeds out, I got tired of waiting for steady weather. A few days of sunshine and those Hostas will pop up.
i'm hoping to see them soon! today was beautiful. tomorrow, isn't supposed to rain all week. well, good for the garden anyway. happy easter everyone! thanks for all your help.
