Name that lettuce!

This is my salad for tonight. These plants are from a lettuce mix called "Summer Glory." I went ahead and harvested these 2 plants because they were starting to grow upwards fast and I thought they might bolt soon. I suppose these aren't "cut 'n come", huh?

With regard to lettuce, what does "bolt" mean?

Thanx.

John,

That looks like it might be some sort of Romaine/Cos lettuce. They do grow somewhat vertically. Did your mix say that it has any Romaine lettuce?

GrayThumb--Bolt means basically to have a sudden burst of growth, flower, and form seeds. It's normally a bad thing for leafy vegetables like lettuce, spinach, etc.

John,
Those are nice. Are they hard like Romaine? If so, I might try that variety. I can't seem to get lettuce from the seeds I plant. Probably my timing, again!

Summer Glory is a blend of 7 varieties of lettuce and is sold by Park Seed. And yes, it contains Romaine as well as loose-leaf, butterheads, and crispheads. I would not describe the entire leaf as hard or firm, but the main rib in the leaves gives it some crunch. It grows vertically, too. It just might be some type of Romaine lettuce. Thanks David/ Linda.
