Does anyone have some ideas of plants that will grow under a very large and mature cedar tree? My grass will not grow due to the extensive amount of needles that fall every year from it. Are there any plants that would do well or am I stuck staring at brown needles all the time?

What to grow under a cedar tree?
Clearly the cedar tree is making the soil acidic so you need to account for together with the shade. Typically this would mean azaleas and rhoddendrons. However I find both these plants suffer in the very hot summers ( I live in Illinois) and do not flourish. They grow but not go crazy like a healthy plant does.
I wonder if containers would work under a cedar tree. I don't have any and i do love cedars.

I wish I could say the same about Cedars. I hate the darn things and my yard is full of them. Noticing your from SD, I doubt that an azalea would last through your winter. Drive around and look at other peoples yards. See what they have.
