Blueberries and/or Raspberries in Containers?

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

Can I plant blueberries and/or raspberries in containers? If so, how large should the containers be? What kind works or doesn't work? What do I do with the plants and pots in the winter? Does the bottom need to have gravel and/or broken clay pots for drainage? Do the containers need to have hole(s) in the bottom for drainage?

Thank you.

Hey Gray
I too want to grow bluberries in pots. I assume lots of drainage and an acid soil. I plan to use as large a pot as possible at least 10 gallon. However I am looking for answers as well. Have you purchased yet??
I'm ordering today. Best of luck!!

I've decided to plant the blueberries and raspberries in the ground. I'm getting the blueberries locally since they have set fruit and ordering the raspberries tomorrow. Also ordering a climbing rose to grow with the blueberries. Since I found out raspberries don't look pretty for a good part of the year, they'll go on the side of the house near the back and the blueberries will be in front. I just hope that the raspberries will grow OK since that side of the house is in shade most of the day.

I've had a blueberry in a pot (14 inch) on a mostly sunny part of my deck, for about 4 years now. It has over wintered very well with no protection- Zone 7B (Maryland). All I do is trim the dead limbs and add compost/new soil in the spring. I am planting two more blueberries this year in pots and will group them together so I can throw netting over them. My single bush usually produces lots of berries but the birds seem to get there first!
