I live in zone 8 on the Mississippi Coast. I planted my peace lily last summer in a part shade area that gets some morning sun. It looked sad last year, droopy mostly. Now after reading up on Peace Lilies some, I think it was due to A: lack of water and B: shell shock ( went from house plant to outside without harding off) This winter it died back, but as of yet it has not grown back. I know now that they are tropical plants, but I still hope it will survive. How long should I wait before giving up on the Peace lily to come back? Its it gone for good? I added some bloodmeal to the area last week and been keeping it moist.
Peace Lily died this winter will it survive?
I afraid the plant is gone. Our winter should have done it in. Sorry to be bearer of bad news. No hardening off will save a tropical plant in our winter, however mild it's. It has gone below 32F. degrees hasn't it? Beyond 32F, plant tissues froze and gone.
Thanks! :( Well at least I know that I can get another plant to fill the spot now before the heat of summer hits! Thanks for responding!
Unless if the area is in deep shade. The leaves would be burnt. How did they fare last summer for you?
My peace lilly was left outside during this winter also. Its in a pot, & it looks dead. I have lleft it alone, & I saw a few green leaves emerging. The root is not freeze, just the leaves. Lots of plants die off during the summer, & then reamerge in the spring. I used to think these plants were dead(lillys, amarilyas, some grasses), but they are all emerging this spring. You learn something new every spring.
They stayed green, but droopy.
They couldn't handle the sunlight! In their native habitat, I assume they grow as understory and had very little direct sunlight. Zone 9 is almost subtropical zone compared to us on zone 7 and below. :)
This may be of some interest... I had a peace lily blooming and growing in nothing but water for a few years. I changed the water regularly and gave it just a small amount of liquid fertilizer every couple months. It got sunlight through a window from the north side. It was in a clear round type bowl similar to a fishbowl. It got new leaves and bloomed each year. I don't recall what happened to it as I have relocated since then and it was a few years ago.
