It's my first day on DG, and my first post. Hi there. A few months ago, we had a Carolina Cherry tree removed from our backyard. The tree guy "chipped" it, and we kept the "chippings" for use as mulch. I was reading that Carolina Cherry trees are poisonous, and now wondering if it's safe to use. I was planning to mulch under a lemon tree, and in strawberry, and vegetable beds. Should I?
Thanks!
Are "chippings" from a Carolina Cherry safe to use as mulch?
I cant say IF the tree is poisonous or not, but assuming the tree surgeon will know his trees from the wood, I would be inclined NOT to use the chippings beside edible foods or in the beds you wish to grow them, you could give your local parks department or the people who know about the trees in your area for better info, it would be a shame to spread this chipped tree then find out you have given yourself a mega problem, however, on the other hand, it might be OK to use and the tree guy was pulling your leg. good luck, WeeNel.
Thanks so much for your post. I'll be sure to confirm before using the mulch near any edibles.
