I just got home from Lowe's with a bunch of what I think are hearty plants. I live in Brooklyn, NYC, which is a zone 7. I bought the following plants:
Scotch Moss, tag says zone 5
Irish Moss, tag says zone 5
Habanera English Daisy, tag says zone 4
Tulip, tag says zone 4
Since all of those plants can withstand temperatures below freezing, is it ok to plant all of these outside now, even though we may get frost again before it warms up? Thanks for your help! :)
Can I plant these NOW?
I would imagine that they have all been greenhouse raised and may not be able to withstand extremely cold temps now. They will acclimatize once planted and should withstand the colder temps.
As for the tulips, the bulbs are usually planted in the fall as they need 'chill time" in order to bloom. You could plant them now and mark the area so you will know where to look for them next spring.
The tulips already have leaves on them though... they are a few inches high already. I am going to put them in pots anyway - should I plant them in the pots and keep them in the house for a couple of weeks?
And as for the others, should I just keep them in the house in their containers until the danger of frost has passed, since they were likely greenhouse grown?
I would put the Tulips outside now so they continue with their growth since it sounds like they are already prechilled and growing on their own just fine...
I would think the moss's would be find outside now, the daisy's? well it depends if the nursery who grew them actually hardened them off (allowing them time outside of temp. controlled greenhouses) those you might wish to bring in at night for about a week as it looks like we're all going to see some temp dips this next week...
happy gardening!
Sorry Allie, I did not realize the tulips were in pots. Good advice Rednyr.
Yes, all of the tulips are already sprouted and growing in plastic containers from Lowe's.
I can't plant until next weekend now anyway since it's nighttime now, so I put them by the window so they can get some sun for the week and hopefully by next weekend the worst of the winter cold will be over.
