What to plant under 2-year-old rosa rugosa in zone 7a?

Monroe, NY(Zone 6b)

I live on the South Shore of eastern Long Island, NY (zone 7a). I planted 7 bareroot rosa rugosa 2 years ago. They're doing great (hope they'll be okay after our very harsh, snow-filled winter), and would like to plant something under them, perhaps a low growing ground cover. The roses are planted along the front of my cottage which faces west, there are no trees nearby to provide shade & gets a lot of southern light. The cottage is painted a pale yellow, so it reflects some heat. I live right on a bay that has a barrier island about 3/4-1 mile away with the Atlantic Ocean right there. We sometimes get some strong winds coming off the water (the left side & back of the cottage face the water). There are no trees nearby that shade the area. Of course, the roses will shade what I plant. Any thoughts/ideas on what to put there?

Thanks for any input.
Peace,
Jennifer

Hope this helps

Also, marigolds, Lamb's Ear, thyme ...basically anything without a root system that would compete with your roses
ENJOY!

As this bed is close to the house / porch etc, I would be going for plants with perfume like Lavenders etc, there is nothing more welcoming as you walk onto your porch or to sit and get a waft of scent in the breeze, AH forgive me, I am just back from holiday and still in dream land. good luck, WeeNel.
