Orange African Bulbine

Austin, TX

My orange African Bulbine grew great all last year from Spring to winter but now seems to be dead. It is all mushy & very brown. I did clip back back all the long stems (deadhead) during late winter. Does anyone know if she is just in dormant stage or a goner? It was a beautiful plant for many months until winter. We did have some cold nights but this is TX so they weren't too bad. She does seem to still be living when I clear it back & look towards the roots.
Any advice or thoughts is appreciated!
thx

All the info says it is hardy down to 20 degrees. I too am waiting to see if mine returns. I would give it a bit longer to see if it returns from the root stock.

Thank you Howl---I will post a pic tomorrow if I remember to take it. We'll see if ours looks the same.

I have them and a few times mine appeared to have "died" but the cold just seemed to get them on the nights when it got down into the 30's. They came right back when the weather started to warm up. Yours should bounce back if mine did.

I hope so but it isn't looking real promising!

I am sorry if you have lost your Bulbine. Mine has not frozen back, even with the last two winters that killed my Hibiscus and Pentas. I am wondering if anyone has any advice on dividing and transplanting Bulbine. What started as a one-pot purchase has multiplied with neglect. I love this plant.

You can do rootball divisions, cuttings or some bulbine produce seed.Do your divisions in the Spring.

Trim back the dead stuff, and wait....sorry, but other than digging it up to look at the roots (and possibly damaging the plant) that is about all you can do.

I know I should trim down the long stems but should I go ahead & trim back everything? I assume I should trim it all back until just the original base is showing?
thanks!

Hey Ticker...was in Lowe's yesterday and they had a whole table of Bulbine....mine bit the dust, so I got 2 to replace it....GRIN

funny you say that.....I pulled mine up yesterday! bit the dust as well. I am going to replace this weekend. I think this winter I will cover when the temps get to low. That is the only thing I can think of that could've happened. They are cool plants...I ain't giving up on them yet!

You might want to check how much water it gets in the winter...they need to be on the slightly drier side. rain and freezing temps can kill them overnight.

that's probably what happened
thanks
