Pot Size for Broadleaf Sage?

Kansas City, KS(Zone 5a)

Hi--

I have a year-old sage plant in a 2 1/2-quart pot, and have recently noticed that a lot more of the leaves are beginning to yellow (old and new growth, and not gradually; it seems like the entire leaf turns yellow at the same time). I thought I could be over-watering it, so I began testing the soil with a moisture meter. For the past month, the plant is only receiving water when the soil is nearly completely dry, but the leaves continue to yellow and fall. The plant also receives regular feedings (1/2 strength Alaska fish fertilizer every three months). Is it possible the plant's root structure is just outgrowing it's current pot? Any and all help is appreciated!

The quickest way to tell is to lift the plant from the pot. The roots will be a solid mass with very little soil visible if the plant is pot bound. I would venture to say that in a pot that small, the plant probably is in need of some room to spread out. If so, gently loosen the root ball so the roots are no longer conforming to the shape of the former pot (you can soak it for a bit to soften and loosen the soil.) This will enable the roots to spread in the new pot. I would use a fairly deep 8 to 10 inch container to transplant the sage into. Pot it up,, at the same planting depth, with good soil and water it in well. Give it a few days to settle in and then feed it.
