How to get rid of wildflowers easily

I have a large patch of wildflowers that I would like to kill then plant something else there. How can I do that without having to apply a brush killer chemical or digging them out? Would blocking their access to sunlight work? If so, how long would I have to block the sunlight to make sure they are completely killed. Thank you.
