I have some very mature yews which are lining a northeast corner of my home. They are close to 4 ft. deep and almost that tall. It is a pain to get behind them to trim. I was wondering how far back I could possibly prune them without killing them and what time of the year would be best for doing so.

You can trim and shape your yews now as extreme as you need to. They recover from anything and offer endless choices for shaping. They are a no fail plant. Get out your saw and remove branches, don't be afraid. It's a fun shrub to work with
