I have a tree line along the side of my yard that is sloped down to the side street. I am wanting to get rid of the weeds in that area, but keep the trees, and plant some wildflowers along that tree line. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good weed killer for that area that wont harm both the trees that are there and the wildflowers that I am wanting to plant there?
Herbicide question
Any weedkiller containing glyphosate would do the job. It's deactivated on contact with the soil, so won't harm subsequent plantings. ( I think you spell it with an f instead of ph in America)
It's still spelled glyphosate here. Roundup is one commonly available product with that active ingredient. Just make sure you buy regular Roundup not the extended control one--the extended control has something else that stays behind in the soil to prevent new weeds from coming up. I'm not sure that would be good for your tree, and it definitely wouldn't be good for other things that you try to plant in that area in the next few months. If you want something more natural, you can smother the weeds with layers of newspaper (top off with mulch to make it look nicer and keep the paper from blowing away)
Thanks so much! I dont have enough newspaper to cover the entire length of area I am wanting to kill off, otherwise, I'd try it LOL! If I cut up a bunch of trash bags to lay across the area and hold them down with rocks, would that help to kill off the weeds without harming the trees roots... or do you think that would just help to hold in warmth and promote more weed growth?
The trash bags aren't porous so they will prevent water from getting to the tree's roots so I wouldn't recommend it. If you want to take that sort of approach, buy some weed cloth/landscape fabric. It has pores that will let the water through so the tree won't suffer along with the weeds (it blocks the light from the weeds so they'll still die)
Ahhhh gotcha! Thanks!!
I use newspaper, too.
Just call your local newspaper office and ask if they have any leftover newspapers they would like to give away. Usually they will be more than happy to let you have all you want.
