Spring 2011 - What's blooming in your garden? Part 2

Gautier, MS

And here he is! It was an unexpected visit at the moment!

Wow! Y'all are blowing me away with all the gorgeous blooms in your gardens! I love all the different kinds of plants! Many I have not seen or grown myself! I am partial to clematis! Jackie - Yours is beautiful! And your iris is lovely. I am growing 3 Japanese Irises this year as an experiment for Polly! I am hoping mine bloom!

Debra - What are those yellow blooming plants? Very pretty!!!!

gardenpom - Your photos are outstanding! I always enjoy your close-ups and perspective! :-) Water lilies grow like weeds for me. I have two small pre-formed ponds and some small water containers. Very shallow all of them. I grow mainly hardy water lilies and have not had any problems with most of them. The tropicals are more sensitive to cold temps. The easiest plants to grow, IMHO! I don't have to worry about watering them because they live in water. I just have to add water to the containers when it evaporates. :-)

Helena - You know I am a sucker for Hummingbirds! I LOVE that photo of your handsome visitor!!!! So cool!!! :-) ♥

I have to tell y'all how tickled I am to be growing edible plants this year. I grew a few last year, too. But I've expanded to some new plants and I got to use one of the bell peppers off my plant yesterday when cooking dinner. I got the biggest kick out of going out into my backyard and removing a pepper, bringing it inside to cut up (I saved the seeds of course!), and used it to make Fajitas! My dh even got a kick out that fact! And let me tell ya ... it was the best tasting bell pepper! It had great flavor, not bland like the store peppers! I can't wait to eat melons, eggplant, tomatoes, and other veggies this year! :-)

Jackie - Somehow I missed your post about your missing cat! I am glad she showed up safe! Geez ... pets worry us as much or more than our children some times! LOL! Of course, they are like children to us, too!

Someone asked what program I use to make the collages. It's actually a digital scrapbook program that I purchased several years ago. It's called Scrapbook Factory Deluxe.

Thanks Becky. Wonderful getting to eat veges from your own garden. :-)
We are so relieved to have Crippled Baby home. We were so worried.

What beautiful flowers. Here's a few of mine.

Helana is that pokerweed in a pot? I have one in a small pot that
I have overwintered in my sunroom. I want to put mine in the ground
and hopefully get some seeds from it.

zinnia, your pink are pink evening promrose and your purple & pale pink are Canterbury Bells ...both are lovely!

MGman, that zinnia is very cool!

We are in daffodill & tulip heaven here in Maine right now. ^_^
Hope you are all having a wonderful Mother's Day!

Those tulips are so pretty, nice contrast. Thanks for the i.d.'s on the plants. I planted the seeds
of the canterbury bells last year and never labeled the pots. Was wondering why they never bloomed.
Left them outside all winter in pots, we had snow too.
I see that they are biennials. If they bloom long enough I may save seeds and grow them again.

So Jon, apparently Lady Banks likes her fertilizer martinis shaken not stirred. Sorry, could not resist! Lovely blooms!

Very nice snapdragon, MGMan!

In fact, very nice blooms – everyone!

Gosh, I don't have anything blooming outdoors yet, I think a couple of bougies is blooming but I don't have photos of them...

Very nice flowers everyone,

Jon, I miss my Ladybanks, gosh, they were growing great when we moved, I often wonder if they were all yanked out by the contractor that purchased our property. They come in yellow and in white, and I could have sworn I saw a red one the other day.

Great blooms everyone. My orange Iris from last yr, can't find my pics from last week.
This orange Iris is one of my favorites.

Well, I am truly IMPRESSED with all the gorgeous blooming plants that everyone is posting here! WOWEE!!! ♥♥♥

Tony - Your whirlygig zinnia is really neat! Nice snapdragon too!

Nice plants and blooms, Lilyofthenight!

Zinniared - I LOVE your iris! What a beauty!!!! And the other blooming plants are lovely, too! Spring is in the AIR!!! :-)

Pixie - Are all those tulips in your yard??? Beautiful!!!

Jon - Lady Banks rose is amazing!!! WOW!!! I want one of those! Now that I have a name for such a fast and huge growing rose, I'll be on the look-out for one for sale here! ♥

Nick - I've never see a Tassel Flower before! Really unusual looking! I like the orange color. :-)

Jackie - Love your orange Iris. I have a few bearded iris plants that I've been growing for two years that someone shared with me in a trade. They have never bloomed. I don't know what the secret is to get them to flower...

It's Spring almost Summer here and everything is in bloom. My daylilies this year have produced an abundance of blooms. I didn't think they could get any better than last year, but they are producing a lot more blooms in flushes! Most all the blooms are on tall stalks, too! Colors are the same, but definitely a lot more blooms than last year!

They are all NOID from crossed cultivars that were sent to me in trade. Apparently some VERY nice cultivars to boot! I think I hit the jackpot when I got all those seeds and they all germinated for me! I am thrilled to have such a lovely selection of daylily blooms now! This is year 3 for most of them. :-)

Here is one cluster of blooms. I've been cross-pollinating all the blooms! LOL! I hope to get some more unique blooming daylilies in the future!

These are still some of my favorite daylily blooms. I love red! So these do get my attention every morning!

Here is a better view of my raised bed that is home to most all my daylilies. I see this every morning as I am walking out to feed the birds and squirrels :-) Starts my day off right! :-)

I grew this hollyhock last year from seed, but it never bloomed. Well, much to my delight ... it bloomed this year for me and it is RED!!! I was so hoping it'd be red and what a treat to see these gorgeous blooms! :-)

I never thought I could grow Hollyhocks here. I've never seen them before. Clematis is another plant I also never expected would do well here in the heat of Florida. But I got a few different ones in co-ops over the past few years and they have grown really fast for me and bloomed like crazy! I've quickly become a clematis fan now, too!

This is Josephine. She's a beauty! First time she's had a full size bloom for me! On Mother's Day no less! :-)♥

The east fence is covered in coral vines and blooms year round for me. It's a favorite of the hummingbirds! :-)

All these blooms is why I really like Bloom Booster! I am sure that is why my plants bloom in large flushes! No other fertilizer produces these results! I know there are people who don't like BB, but I am sold on this product! I use that and Alaskan Fish Emulsion together and water my plants every few weeks during the Spring and also again in the Fall. And I fertilizer sporadically during the summer. The heat is too much for many of the plants during the hot part of the year here.

Here is a mistake I just posted. It's wilting blooms from I. indica which turn this deep purple as they wither at the end of the day!

This Australian Aurantia Passiflora has blooms that stay open and change from white to almost red over the course of 4 days. It's the only Passiflora that I know of that has blooms that last more than one day! This vine was grown from seeds that I got in a trade. Boy! Did I ever luck out! Almost every single flower produces a fruit (and seeds). :-) Here is what this vine looks like almost every day ... just loaded with blooms!

Beautiful!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, love your Josephine Cematis and the pink Daylily
Your aurantia passionflower is pretty special too.
Since my orange iris is growing in a pot, I can't let it get too rootbound or it won't bloom.

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

Becky's in the lead here but then we don't have her climate! I'm still waiting for my clems to flower, hydrangeas got burned by some unusually hard frosts and won't produce flower this year, lost all my hibiscus too!

Gourd, I've only ever seen lady banks in yellow or white, I'd sure love a red one! Is there one?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Jon, sorry you lost some of your plants.
You're right, Becky has the best climate for growing tropicals. I envy her that locale.
A greenhouse is the next best thing. Mine needing some work, looking
pretty rough.

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

patootie, yep mine's looking pretty rough too! We had one of the worst winters ever here crowned by the earthquake and nuclear disaster, we have elevated levels of radiation in the soil which makes me reluctant to do too much in the garden for now. Hopefully once they bring the nuclear plant under control levels will begin to fall, I live in Ibaraki, we have the highest levels next to Fukushima.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank you Debra, Jackie, and Jon!

I am very fortunate for the climate I live in. While many of you were still dealing with winter freezes, I was getting Spring blooms! It is sometimes paradise here for gardeners, but there is no perfect place on earth that I know of. We have hurricanes, intense heat and dry spells in summer, a multitude of plant pests and diseases, and horrible soil. Not to mention my state having one of the worst economies in the USA currently. But these days when my plants are blooming abundantly, it makes me appreciate gardening here and forget about the negatives of living in Florida. :-)

The thing that amazes me the most though ... the plants that I have successfully grown for the past several years ... came from seeds from online traders! Most of the plants I've paid for from the local nurseries have not survived past the first year. But those started from seed and survived, are tough and do very well here! And most are in containers! Go figure!

When mine are dying back soon, y'all will be sharing your bloom photos! Kind of nice that someone here always has blooms in their garden to share with all of us! :-) :-) :-) I am very much looking forward to seeing more blooms from everyone! Bring it on!!!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jon - I didn't know your radiation levels were the second highest!!! Even over 100 miles away??? Was it the wind or something that carried it over your town/village?

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

Love the pics everyone...so beautiful! Here is a pic of my garden taken in March..I had blooms on my roses!!!! That's quite unusual!! Will have to get another picture of the garden as it's growing.. it's really growing profusely now!!!

Thumbnail by cindylove
(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Cindy - Welcome back! I like how you used the concrete bricks! Very nice! Your garden looks awesome! Looks like you have a very nice selection of plants in it, too! What's going to be growing on the little arched trellis?

Why is it unusual to be having blooms on your roses? I have several different rose bushes and they bloom year round for me as long as I fertilize and water them regularly. :-) Do yours only bloom once or twice a year?

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

Becky I don't know why our radiation levels are higher than other neighboring prefectures, perhaps wind?
But there you are. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/radiation-levels.html
