With their beautiful large flowers, lilies have long been a garden favorite. Lilies are divided into several categories based on growing habits and flower shape. All lilies need rich, well-drained soil. Although most can take full sun, they do not like their roots warm, so mulch well. Lilies are grown from bulbs which are planted in the spring or fall. These herbaceous perennials are a beautiful addition to any garden.

I know I'm very proud of mine. I have some Orientals and Asiatics.
The fragrance of the Orientals sends sweet odor all through my yard. and the bright Asiatics color my yard.
I had some come up from seed last year, I hope they bloom this year so i can see what color they are.
Daylillys are not real lillys but i have more of them than my others.

cando1, does the lily plant die off in the fall, & then come back up in the spring on its own every year. I know nothing about these plants. I sure would love to get some started. The fragrance you mention has inspired me. You should be a romance book writer. I'mm going to try to find & buy some at Walmart this week.
Fragrant lilies are; orientalis, trumpet (looklike Easter Lily, but come in pink, white, yellow, and orange, also they smell like Easter Lilies, My favs.) A few years ago I got a dwarf variety priceii, they are white easter type, 6-10", and very fragrant. Another I started by seed from Park's Seed, Lancer, took til second summer to bloom but were wonderful 6" , fragrant and beginning to multiply. Yeah!!!There are several species that are also fragrant and most available from places such as "B and D lilies" (.com). Love, love, love lilies. Got some of the newer crosses of L A hybrids and the Ornapets, some are fragrant too. Seems like the Asiatics are some of the most prolithic of the lilies, the array of colors is fantastic, love them also. Another fav is the tiger lily, they multiply readily as they form little bulbils in the leaf axils, which drop to the ground and pull themselves into the ground to grow, as they get bigger they keep pulling themselves downward to the appropriate depth, also they are multipling underground. There are some lilies that form along the stem during the growing season, when doing fall cleanup check pulled stems (after browning), some grow little bulbils along the stem just under the surface, if you pull them up, pull from stem and pop them back in the ground a few inches deeper ans you get new plants, bloom probably in 2 years,( will produce foiliage each year til old enough to bloom). Good luck, Kathy.
Kathy gave great info. I have all three kinds. The Orientals are my favorites. One that i have is Star Gazer. beautiful white and pink. I also have the old fashioned Easter Lily.
Lowes usually has some in late summer and fall.
