asparagus

Wytheville, VA

my asparagus is in it's second year now, can I harvest this year

Boston, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes you're supposed to be able to harvest this year if they were grown from crowns. If grown from seed it takes three years before you're supposed to harvest

Only harvest the ones that are bigger in diameter than a pencil, and stop harvesting after a few weeks so that the crowns can store up for next year.

granny39 I would wait to harvest until the asparagus stalks are as thick as your little finger. Once they are that big you can harvest all season long and not hurt the roots. Putting some manure around the stalks each fall will also help them to grow larger faster. Happy Gardening!

I'm planning to grow some asparagus for the first time this year. If I plant the two year crowns, will I also be able to harvest a small amount this year or do they have to be in the same place for two years to be harvestable?

Along those same lines, I have seen 3 year old crowns offered. Would I be able to get a substanial harvest from these this year or do they need to have another year in the same place?

Valdosta, GA(Zone 8b)

I've planted both one and two year crowns. The older crowns did not offer me any earlier harvesting, and I found them to be more brittle than the one year crowns. Just my experience, but I didn't find buying older crowns worth the extra expense.

I seem to remember our local tv gardening show saying not to purchase crowns older than one year becaue they don't transplant well.

We only plant 1 year old asparagus crowns. We have seen no advantage to older crowns. However there is a big disadvantage to buying older crowns, for each additional year, you lose that amount on the plant life. We are always able to harvest some spears the following year with our one year old crowns. We always manure heavy in the fall.
