Bugs and Snakes

Randlett, OK

I need help! I have always been a gardener and I just got married and moved to southwest rural Oklahoma, town of 400 who don't take care of their yards in general. My husband says if I landscape and plant a garden it will attract bugs and snakes from all around. Any suggestrions, I do so want to pretty up our yard and not be like the neighbors who don't care.

As snakes tend to seek out places where they can hunt and be undisturbed, it would seem that they would avoid an area that is tended and has activity in it. Perhaps he is hoping to avoid a large "honey-do" list. Grin

Walkerton, VA(Zone 7a)

Nonsense! All you'll attract are envious neighbors admiring your handiwork. Who knows? Maybe you'll start a trend.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

I live in copperhead country. I'm the only gardener on my road. I don't seem to have more nor less snakes than anyone else. Snakes love to eat mice. Don't think I've come across a vegetarian(SP) snake. LOL

Go for it! We only have problems with snakes when the city doesn't keep the easments mowed and the grass gets high or if we get a neglectful neighbor. To control rodents, we put up screech owl nesstng boxes. The rats love baby coconuts

Making a garden where there is none. Adding fresh herbs and flowers to the table. You can't go wrong!

Sounds like you could be the inspiration of 400 folks!
