Chrysanthemum lost it's color, how do i get it back?

Fredericksburg, VA

Looks like I must not have the proper nutrients for my mums. Will the color ever return? If so, what can I feed them to keep their color? Thank you for any assistance provided!

What exactly has lost color? The leaves, the flowers?

Fredericksburg, VA

The flowers. They come up white with a burgundy partial center instead of the full dark color they used to have. I have had them in the ground for a couple of years now and this year I wanted to make sure I fed them the proper nutrients and checked the acidty in the soil so that I wouldn't have the same problem this year. The leaves are still beautiful and green and they grow gorgeous, wide and tall, but the colors are missing. ;(

Any help would be greatly apprectiated. Seems my other plants are happy. Lillies all have gorgeous colors too (every year). Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Are you sure it's the exact same original plants? Your original mums were probably hybrids that wouldn't come true from seed, so it's possible that your original plants died and these are babies that came up from their seeds. When that happens, the flowers that you get won't necessarily look like your original plants.

I have only found one comment thus far, and it referred to the plants being "grower treated with growth hormones that might possibly cause color changes as the hormone wore off....but I have no idea if that is factual. I will keep looking and let you know if I find anything.

I agree with ecrane until some other feasible answer comes up. Sorry about your plants, Lizzie. Luciee {;^)

The key to having colorful chrysanthemum plants is to stop giving it nutrients right before the buds open up. If you keep giving mums fertilizer as they open the color will wash out. Water only once the buds start opening and you will have the best color. Enjoy your chrysanthemums!

Organic_Joe, You seem to be experienced in growing mums. My mums will get millions of buds in the summer, but the buds do not want to open. Some times they will open just barely. I think there might be a worm or something inside the bud. Is this possible. Also, I have some that are full of leaves, & about 3 feet tall, with no buds, just leaves. Am I watering these too much, or too much nitrogen.
