what kind of plant is this?

St. JOhn's, Canada

I bought this plant at home depot tonight but the only thing the pot said was "tropical plant, keep soil moist" Nobody there knew what it was either. Also many of the plants there were dead or dying, so I am not sure how to care for this plant either.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks so much!!:)

I believe you have a Dracaena species of the Corn Plant, check here http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54287/

Hi,I think your plant is a Yucca Elepantipes or Spineless Yucca.Evie

Ok thanks guys, I really appreciate it! :)

Are the leaves soft and pliable? If so, it could be Dracaena fragrans ("Corn Plant"): http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=corn+plant&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Mgd9TZCKGOi40QG3-oXRAw&ved=0CDoQsAQ&biw=1262&bih=718

If the leaves are thicker and kind of sharp along the edges I'd guess Yucca guatemalensis ("Spineless Yucca"): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/734/

If the tips of the leaves are like real sharp dangerous points then I'd say one of the other Yucca's like Yucca aoifolia: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=yucca+aloifolia&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&sa=X&ei=kQh9TbzPCMPp0gH977zoAw&ved=0CCoQsAQ&biw=1262&bih=718

Christine: I have a hard time identifying plants by trying to compare photo's so I only make guesses and I'm not real sure which plant meimie1000 has, it looks like Dracaena but it also looks like Yucca, LOL.

Yes,thanks from me too plantladylin for the explanation, the plants do look very similar.

Since it came from Home Depot I'd put my money on Dracaena, that's something they'd be more likely to have. But every now and then you can find more unusual things there too so anything is possible.
