alternative to wheelers pittosporum

Rockwall, TX

I'm starting from scratch on my front flowerbed as a landscape newbie. I have a professionally drawn-up plan that I'm hoping to follow, however I am fully aware that it is possible the landscaper suggested certain plants at the time because they had a lot in stock or were trying to get rid of some. So I am trying to be educated as I go.

The plan calls for 6 wheelers pittosporum under one of the front windows with carpet roses in front of them. The rest of the bed is azaleas, verbenas and a few ornamental grasses. The pittosporum looks to be the main source of greenery to tie it all together, especially in the winter.

My problem is I don't really like them, it seems every other house has them and they just bore me to tears. I want the bed to look nice in the winter when most of the color is gone. Do you have any suggestions of a replacement?

This site has quite a few evergreen and flowering shrubs, many under 4ft tall that may pique your interest.

If you don't have deer, Indian Hawthorn is a good sub. I'm also fond of a new-ish Ligustrum called 'Lake Tresca' that only gets 4' tall. Also, carpet roses aren't exactly carpet-y. Mine 'Scarlet Carpet' plants are 3' tall.
