I have a Magnolia x 'Yellow Bird' that's a couple of years in the ground, all of about 6 feet tall and this third year of its spring blooming it has sent out a first bloom that is white instead of yellow. I'm not particularly upset by this though I guess I should expect it to have the attributes that I paid for. Anyway it is only the first flower to open so far, so could be an exception. The flower is similar to the Royal Star magnolia, one of which I have in another part of the yard. Just interested in any immediate thoughts about whether this has happened to anyone or if some guesses as to why this might have occurred. I am anxious to see what color the rest of the blooms will turn-out to be. Tree gets a lot of sun from sunrise to sunset, soil acid 5.4 ph, moist clay with some organic substance, feed it organic fertilizers, no pruning as yet, appears health. Believe it's from the Monrovia nurseries. Located in Wilmington, NC, Zone 8.
