Help - tomatoes

Georgetown, Cayman Islands

Hi guys,

I am hoping one of you can shed a light on what has happened to my tomato plant. It was all going well until the leves started curing down. There is also some light yellow spots on them. I am attaching a picture. I have searched the internet long and hard but i can't seem to find a similar case. Most of the cases involve leaves curling up.

I live in the carribbean and it's 90F+ and quite humid at times. I try watering them once every two days. I keep them in partial sun, ie. sun 8am-1pm as i am afraid i would burn them alive. I dont' know what else to say but if anyone can shed a light i would very much appreciate it.

I thought it was too hot and that they would uncurl over night, but it's not the case.

My tomato plants do this when I have given them too much fertilizer with either high nitrogen or high phosporus.

Are they in pots, or in the ground? If they are in pots, their roots may be too hot.

I've never lived in the Caymen Islands, but have lived in South Florida and I would have thought it would be impossible to grow tomatoes in 90+ temperatures. I always grew tomatoes in the Winter in South Florida. Also, I don't think they will set fruit with only five hours of sunshine. How/when do your neighbors grow them?

The plant is potted. I haven't fed them fertilizer, just tomato food once last month. They get 12 hrs sunshine from 6:30am to 6pm. They are flowering quite well although no fruit yet. I thought it might be lack of beez/wind so i started polinating them with an electric toothbrush.

The plant is growing approx 1/2ft per week, stems look very strong, it's just the leaves that look like they will die soon. None have fallen off and they are hard, paper like to touch.

Tomatoes grow here and jan/feb seems to be the time when everyone pots them as the temps are cooler 75-80F. The potting mix is cool to touch not too hot. I also have placed mulch on top.

I am lost.

Thanks guys, any other thoughts would be appreciated. I just want one tomato, that's all.:-)

Is it possible that the plant has outgrown the pot?

Georgetown, Cayman Islands

It's very possible - the plant is in a 5 gal pot but there are 2 plants in it. I think i will take it as a learning experience. it's about 6ft tall, too much pain to repot it at this time.

Thanks to all of you!

robpatraulea - the smallest pot I would use for one tomato plant is 7 gallons, although I find a 10 gallon is best.
