vegetable gardening in central Florida.

I am starting a vegetable garden in virgin but good soil. I have tilled a plot 50 by 50 ft to begin with. After analyzing and prepping the soil i will be planting corn,tomatoes,sweet potatoes snap beans and onions just to start with.
I live smack dab in the middle of the state of Florida.
My question is this.
I understand there are certain flowers or shrubs you can plat along side the veggies that word off harmful bugs.
Anybody think that is true and would they know which plants?
