I live in rainy, damp, cool Seattle. A Gunnera should do fantastically here. Unfortunately I think my second attempt has passed away over the winter. The bulb seems soft, I fear it rotted but do not want to pick at it. I stopped watering during fall, and mulched, even covering the crown with chickenwire first, to keep the mulch off the crown specifically because I had read that rot was a problem. What is going wrong? The soil is loamy and moist, partial sun, and plenty of water while growing, yet his growing was pathetic and lackadaisical all last year. Please, any info that will help? According to all the books I've read a Gunnera should be a natual here. So where am I going wrong?
