amaranth question

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

I have trouble growing this seed. I can get it to two leaves, about an inch high and it dies. Ive been starting it the same way I do other seeds and it is the only thing that dies. Anyone have some experience with this? Im trying to grow Early Splendor. TIA Cam

Since no one else has replied, I am linking to a standard growing guide for all members of the family. Early Splendor (Amaranthus tricolor) is normall grown as an ornamental, but can be used as a vegetable amaranth ( spinach substitute). They grow like weeds in hot weather. http://www.heirloom-organics.com/guide/va/guidetogrowingamaranth.html http://www.backyardgardener.com/plantname/pda_e640.html

Thanks, Farmerdill. Maybe my early start of the seeds were not warm enough. There seems to be an emphasis in the article on it's heat loving properties. I have started some more seeds and they are half inch high under the light. I may direct sow some too to hedge my bet. Thanks for your help. Cam
