Best border grass and how to plant it?

Gonzales, LA

What's a nice border grass that looks good even in winter? I was thinking Liriope but I would like some ideas.

Does the border plant keep weeds and grass from creeping in along the edges? And do I need to use the plastic edging or anything else if I use the border grass?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

You can either use edging or make a shallow trench (just below the level of the lawngrass roots around the outside edge of the bed between the border grass and lawn about 6 inches wide.

St Augustine, centipede and bermuda grasses will climb right in with your border grasses and then into the beds. After years of using edging and having to use the edger/weedeater to keep the grass in check, I have started moving toward the trenches...you drop one side of the mower in the trench and go...no need to weedeat or edge.

Here are some suggestions from LSU AG Center for your border grass choices.
