How to re-pot an azalea???

Lodi, CA

Was wondering what is a good time for re-potting an azalea that has started to out grown its old container?? How do I go about taking out the azalea and putting it into a new, larger container??
Thank you.

As soon as it outgrows the container it's in is the time to move it.
Make sure you use soil made for containers.

I grow lots of Azalea's, Rhododendrons etc, etc, the best time to move or re-pot your plant is either just after it has flowered, or when the summer is over and the weather is cooler, to remove the plant from the container it is in, you can use a trowel (Carefully) and scrape / remove as much soil as you can although if the plant is pot bound, you can either break the pot carefully, if plastic, cut down the sides to pull apart without damaging the roots.
Once you have removed the old pot, you need to make sure the new one is deep enough and wide enough, add some special Azalea compost (you get this from garden center) to the bottom of new pot, you need to check the depth so you don't put the plant in too deep, it needs to sit in the pot to the same depth as last pot, (you will see the soil mark on the stem when you remove the plant) after you have re potted the plant and firmed the soil around the roots etc, you give it a good drink and place it back where you know it has been happy before. (IF the roots are tightly bound around each other when you first remove the plant from the pot, you can use your fingers to tease some roots free from the root ball. I like to give all my plants that require acidic soil a feed after flowering and I dead head them, this allows the plants time to take up the feed and make the buds that are already forming strong and plump, they grow over the summer months, hope this helps you out, WeeNel.
