I'm hoping someone knows a garden center that can supply Poor Man's Rhododendron (Impatiens sodenii) in the Long Beach area (Southern CA).
I've seen it grown mostly in central and northern CA. Would it be too warm in southern CA? I was planning on planting it in a shady spot.
Thanks for any help.

Where to find Poor Man's Rhododendron in SoCal
I would go to a garden center near you and ask if they'd order you one. They would also probably know if it would do well in your area or not. Up here, I typically only see them grown closer to the coast and I don't see people growing them farther inland where I live. I'm not sure if that's because our winters are too cold or our summers are too hot or a little bit of both. Your winters should be fine, so if you've got a cool shady location for it I think it's worth a try. If your local nurseries can't order you one, Annie's Annuals carries them mail order http://davesgarden.com/products/ps/search.php?search_text=impatiens+sodenii&submit=Search
Thanks for the advice. I did call my local garden center, Armstrong, who are normally very good but they did not appear to know the shrub. I think I will drop by and talk to them in person, perhaps they could order one?
