All of my new palms are turning brown!

Marathon, FL

We have a variety of palms that have been in the ground for close to two months and suddenly, as in the past day, they all are turning brown. We haven't had a lot of rain (in the FL Keys) but they get watered almost daily. Literally some leaves are turning brown at the tops, some have suddenly turned solid brown. It is very strange and very sudden. I don't know if they are all experiencing shock at the same rate or being over watered/underwatered or a bug or poison. Please help! We really don't want to lose all of our precious palms!

A number of things could have contributed to this problem with your palms--stress, poison, too much fertilizer too near the plants, etc. To get a specific answer to your problem, your best bet would be to contact your local extension office, and ask to speak to the county agent or a master gardener. They should be able to help you with this problem, and give you some specific reccomendations. If you live in the Florida Keys, you could contact the Monroe County Extension office at (305) 292-4504. Someone there should be able to help you. Good luck.

We have found some black insects on some of our palms, they are very tiny no more than 1/16" and are circular in shape with a black center and outer white ring. Could this be what is hurting our palms? How do we get rid of it?

I agree, at this point your County agent would be your best bet. They can give you the best info for care, getting rid of pests, etc. Palms can be picky and you need advice from someone who is familiar with them. In many cases they will come to your home.

If your watering as much as you think, the bugs would be washed or blown off the palms with the watering, I know this sounds silly but how are you watering the palms, have you tried to scrape away some soil around the root area as I suspect the root area is too dry, depending on the size of the palms, maybe they need a shelter temporally built for them till they settle, but the place you bought them from would be the first place for advice, good luck.
