Camellia buds

Port Sanilac, MI

We purchased a Camellia plant about 6 weeks ago which had a number of buds. They are still there, nice and round and solid. We had expected them to bust into flowers shortly after planting or dry up and fall off. DH wants to cut them off. I wonder if they are just resting and will come out later when we have a spell of 80 degree weather here in central Florida. Any thoughts?

I have the same issue with my "Pink Perfection" Camellia that I've had two years. It produces buds during the fall and winter and they eventually fall off. People have told me the reason the buds don't open is that we don't have a prolonged period of cold weather in the winter. Apparently the buds react to cold weather and not warm weather when it comes to bloom production. I think they only bloom as far south as Northern Florida. That's probably why they are not sold down here in South Florida. Oh well. Live and learn.

I wouldn't cut off the buds, you will be cutting off the flowers before they get a chance to open. Here they bloom in early spring, around March.

Different Camellias flower at different times. I have three Camillia plants. I had hoped that one would flower in December when little is blossoming. However, my first bloom this year was January 1st. A different plant is at its peak now.

I have two different types--one blooms in late December and the other in January. Do you have yours planted in acidic soil? That's what they prefer. The first two I purchased I planted next to my house where the soil gets runoff from the bricks. A friend at work told me that the bricks slowly add lime to the soil. Both trees tried to grow but just never really thrived. The two I have now are planted well away from the house. They are both six years old, very healthy, and put on abundant blooms every winter that all open.

All the soil around here in our RV park is terrible. We bought a bag of garden soil and planted it in that. It had regular fertilizer in it and I was planning on adding acidic miracle grow but haven't gotten around to it. Opps?

One flower has appeared but has not opened up, it reminds me of a tight rose bud and has been that way over a week.

It is possible that your plant is a greenhouse produced plant. They often-times need a period of adjustment to the change in growing conditions. Give it lots of sun, feed it and be patient. In the greenhouse all factors are constant,( temp, light, fertilization schedule) It may take it a few weeks to regroup and adjust to its' new environment. Transplanting a camellia in full bud can also slow it down a bit.

I spoke too soon the "Pink Perfection" Camellia I've had for 2 years not producing any blooms down South in Ft Lauderdale. Have one opening at the moment.

My poor bush must not be happy either. It only had l bloom, & it eventually fell off without opening. It is also the same size since I bought it 5 years ago. I recently started lea ving the hose drip on it for 3 days straight, & it is producing lots & lots of lea ves. I think they like lots of water. Maybe It will bloom better for me this winter.

Mine hasn't grown much in the couple of years I've had it either. All the buds did open and produce flowers this year for the first time. Have no idea why this year was a good one. The last few blooms are opening and it should be done blooming within the next week. I water mine every 2-4 days depending on time of year/temperatures.
