Help Please - Starting Plants indoors!

Roselle, IL

I want to try my hand at starting my own plants this year. I plan to buy some wire shelving and hang lights over the shelves for the plants. (I considered building my own from pvc pipe, but found some reasonably priced shelving units, so will go with that!)

Anyone have light suggestions? Where to buy? What to buy? What is best for the plants? Where can I find cheap/good lights?

And ANY/ALL other suggestions! :-)

Thanks much!
Shari

You can go expensive, fancy light units, fancy grow light and all that jazz. Personally I used the inexpensive route, shop lights, unit cost $10-12 and bulbs $2-4. Can go alittle more if want to do 1 warm light and 1 cool light. Have been growing for 15ish years this way and is inexpensive. Can grow so many goodies for the garden this way. Just a note if growing in window not usually bright enough light. plants will become leggy, and reach for light. Good Luck, Kathy.

I totally agree!

Does the light matter when getting the seedling to come out of the seed coat? Or light important only after the leaves are there to receive it?

Some seeds need light to germinate while others prefer to remain covered. Check the directions on the package or check with Google for your particular seed.

I know that, but I also read recently that the light only comes into play once the seed coat has been cracked. I don't know if that's true or not though.

There are relatively few species whose seeds that actually require light or dark to germinate. Most species are indifferent. When the seeds start to germinate, the growing seedlings need light.
