Plant Propagation part XXIX based on my own experience

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

naa not me.... I went to HD today to get fittings to finish my coldframe andthey had it looking like late may. but seriously we still have one maybe 2 more due us so I know better than to rush spring.

just click on marketplace and choose what interests you. live plants is where most of my stuff is listed. at the moment mine is listedon top. they also have a search tool to look make it easier to find what you want.

well its bed time ...more tomorrow

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

JB, that was not me on rooting camellias. I do not grow camellias.

Had a long day and did not get anything done. Tomorrow is the Daytona 500. Vern is happy about that. I will just wander around and play house. Going to make a pot roast. I still have at least two weeks for my dishwasher delivery. I ordered two lamps for the great room and they called and will not be sent until end of March.

Our big storm ended up being nothing but talk. Oh well. I am signing off early. I think I will read something. Later, Sharon.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

good morning campers...yes I am up with the chickens again. the only difference is I am headed back to bed. I think it was jeanette asking about camellias for zone 5. I would love to get a few for here as well. its been so nice here that I am having trouble sleeping with all the gears turning in the ol' noggin. plans and plans of plans.
I know i need to get to HD again to get some 1"pipe. I am planning on building a shade framefor my shade lovers. Once I get that squared away I will be able tomove the shade plants to there new home. I just hope I did not kill them leaving the roots exposed. I wonder how long this warming trend will last. being zone 6b I am so ready to get started. I am guessing I will know everyone will have the 5
to 10 degreeheat to keep the chill in check.
well see you later everone

If you lightly/gently tug on the cuttings, if they have rooted, they will be hard to move upward. Do you have the rooting covered. That will keep the humidity up and help with the rooting.

WHO IS THIS? This my dear Sharon is what I read and thought you were a certified camellia person. So I am wrong! I was hoping you could help me but now I will struggle by myself and maybe Jen will not get her camellia I want to grow. WAAAAAAA! I am so sad. Who else is named Sharon is into worms? You had better explain to me who this is....do you have a twin? Hmmmmm.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Finally I have the puter back!!!!!
Thanks to whoever sent this snowstorm..... We have about 9" and it is still coming down hard!! This last week it was quite warm (for here) and we were down to about 2" of the white c*&^, then last nite all h#$%^& broke and here we are again bahhhhhh, will it ever end????? On the bright side, little Storm is loving it. Have you ever heard of a snodog?? well we have one. Hope you are all getting better, sounds like the flu has hit everyone.
Lee

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi Lee Honey, so good to hear your voice again. So Storm loves the snow, great. It is better to have a snodog than a barndog. Barney would not poop yesterday because the wind was too strong to squat. Can you imagine? Some wootz he is. Anyhow I am glad you are o.k.
I wanted to report that I opened the MarketPlace listings yesterday and this morning the orders were coming in already. People area just so eager to get into Spring and plants again. It will be a mess catching up with all the pre-shipping orders. All my orders are on hold until the weather is better. I just refuse to ship until I am ready. I will be the judge or I will not ship. I did not work all winter to keep these little suckers alive and then let them die in a box. LOL
It is a beautiful day today but down to the 30s and 40s again. Still to cold for comfort, at least my comfort.
Have lots to do, so off I go. See you all later. Have a great day. JB

OK JB, how come Dave's listings show up on MP, and not yours? Also, since I am ragging on you JB. what Sharon wrote about Camellias and you copied could have been said about any plant.

I do have to say, it is much nicer hearing you bitching at people again instead of whining.

Reading what you wrote about MP, I wonder if there are 2 MPs. I think somebody should get with Terry and clear it up.

mulege, Mexico

I agree that the search engine in the MP is not all it could be. I get huge responses to specific requests and then have to sort through pages of responses to find the ONE that is what I asked for. I found JB's stuff through her member page.

I slept a lot last night ; still woke up grumpy. I'm still congested from this cold. I over being real sick and am now just annoyed.

I hear a bird convention going on outside. I bought them some little bags of sunflower seeds the other day - all the regular birdseed was gone. I don't know if they would eat chicken feed. They do like the sunflower seeds. My two cats are both fairly old and well-fed so they don't seem to intimidate the birds.

I just finished my first Sylvia Browne book. She really writes well. I've been cruising various subjects in the books department on eBay. Found a few wearable art books that look interesting.

I'm going to check the plants in my outdoor room and then maybe do some sewing.

Stay safe everybody.

hugs, katie

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

O.K. Jen, you find out what I am doing wrong and then tell me how to correct it. I am on Plant Scout, Garden Watchdog and Go Gardening. It is listed as JBs Birds and More. I do not know why the black slash between the B and the s is there, but for some reason that is how it comes up on some of the places. Otherwise it is JBs Birds and More. I will be more than happy to correct anything that needs correcting and I appreciate your help. I need the business and since you are having the problem, maybe it would be appropriate for you to question Terry and see what is wrong. If you go to Plant Scout and look under the J's the listing is there and you click on JBsBirdsandMore and all my listings come up. At least they do for me. Please help me correct any problems. Thanks. I will write to Terry also and ask what the problem is. What is Dave listed as? I need to look up someone to see if it is the same as me. Thanks.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

JBerger ~ if I may, when you (or any of us) click on your name, it will show your DG Marketplace products for sale. when clicked on, this is what you will see. http://davesgarden.com/products/market/user.php?q=JBerger How easy is that?

Jen
Here is what I got from the Adm. DG forum. I did not know that they use JBerger because everything I have is JBsbirdandmore .........So, if you click on my name see what happens.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I'm still sick too Katie. UHG! I finally broke down and took the antibiotics. They said if it lasted 5 days it was probably bacterial. So I am taking them now and feel about 10 % better, not as many body aches.

I moved my seeds inside and some have popped up since it is warmer here. I have one hyacynth bean that popped up too, inside my Brug container. That is cool. I want to plant a lot of them. They are so cool they look like orchids to me.

I am going to watch the Daytona 500 now, but will pop in later.

I don't have good luck with seeds germinating for Day Lilys? What do you guys do with them and when do you start yours?

mulege, Mexico

Wuvie grows a lot of day lillies from seed. You might check with her. I think her website is wuvenacres.com or contact her through d-mail.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Ok sounds good. I love them and they do well here, but I don't have many.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Also, since I am ragging on you JB. what Sharon wrote about Camellias and you copied could have been said about any plant.

Jen,

The above was unnecessary for you to say. I may have to smack you.
I want you to stay out of my heckling Sharon. Mind your own heckles, not mine. I am going to go back to work. Stop picking on me .......I am old. JB

Howdy:
Katie I soak my dl seeds overnight in a kelp seaweed extract and a product called terantula. I used to use those plus pirrahana which gives the seedlings some of the michoriza they need to get started. when I plant my seeds I do them in groups of abour 5 or 6 to a 3.5" pot and water the seedlings in with the soak solution. it takes 3 years to get a bloom so you have to dedicated to see new blooms. I buy a lot of my dl seed from the daylily auction. you can spend a lot of money buying DL seeds.
well I cleaned out my dl bed from the winter and they are about 6" tall. i have a few daffs in bud.

I will look to see where I am on watchdog and plant scout. I may not be anywhere as it might cost money and I refuse to spend any more.

well its brunch time and I gotta go

oh yea linda does camilea's from cuttings so she might have some insight.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

JB, you sweet obnoxious "Easterner". I am sure I was talking about hardy hibiscus. AND, leave Jnette alone. I need someone to stick up for me.

Dawn and Katie, you need to kick whatever you have right out of the door. Dawn, I think I have some small bulbs in the group of daylilies I am moving. I will check. Of course the labor help mixed them up so I have no idea what they are. The majority are yellow Del Oro. I think that is the name. Dave will know.

I am staying inside today even though the sun is shinning. I have all of net week to e outside and I have many items on the dining room table to go through an either pick, put away or give away. Also the day to change the sheets.

Have a great day, and JB, I will research how to root a camellia. Lee stay warm. Dave, I am like you. I keep pushing for spring and we have another cool down coming. But nothing like the three Musketeers. Love you all, Sharon.

Love you all.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Shar, don't waste your time, thanks anyhow, I will look in my file. Lov u

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Sharon I am good for all your cast offs. Just send me the postage bill and were on. Thanks.

I have heard of that terantula product too.

It is all sunny but cool still, but I have all the blinds up for my seed cups. I need to do more, but honestly it is such a mess inside, where will I put all this stuff? I don't have many windows that face West that aren't blocked by a shelter of some sort.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Do you guys know what this may be? Someone sent me some seeds, that look like beans. The bag says Phaseolus Coccinea, "Scarlet Emperor", sun red. Plant files has no info under any of these names. ????

mulege, Mexico

OK JB, out of all of these posts by everone I am still on your very first sentence!! After my last one!! When I go to Marketplace, I look to see what the latest plants are posted. NOT who posted. I am looking for plants!! I am not looking for the seller/vendor.

Dave's plants show up there, and yours used to. What are you doing different? I could go to Terry, but I don't want to know how you are doing it now. I want to find your plants along with everyone elses. ALL PLANTS. Not just one vendor. If I am only interested in the gardenias, Christmas Cacti, whoops, Holiday cacti, then I would do it your way.

Why would I go to Plant Scout, Watchdog, etc. when all I want is to look at plants for sale on Marketplace? Do you know what I mean? I'm sorry I am being so hard to get along with. (: ) not really)

AARGH***%& "What is Dave listed as? Nothing!!!! His plants are posted on MP. I do NOT look for Dave.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, 2nd post. That is right. BUT, I do not want to see just JBurger etc. I want to see all of the PLANTS not vendors.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Listen here "old woman" Your words, I'll get in the middle of your hackles anytime I want to. You have so much fight that I am not enough to pick on, you have to work on everyone else too.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jen, I lost you around the last curve.

I go to Plant Scout because it costs $100 to be listed there and usually the people who pay that money to sell on this site are responsible and their quality of plants are pretty much guaranteed. Many of the individuals who sell their plants will not be listed there. Same with Garden Watchdog because there it tells you the feedback, etc. Now, if you are looking for something specific, go on Market Place , go down to the catagory you want to look into and go from there. I just looked on the MarketPlace and I see the latest listings were some of Dave's and the black pussy willows of mine are there also, you just have to go down the list farther. I do not know what else to tell you. I am sorry. I have ask the Adm. on the place where you ask questions about getting around on the site. We will see what they say.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, you might hold off on the 3D TV. I saw where Best Buy is advertising they are getting ready to sell 4Ds. No glasses, and the glasses are expensive. However, I doubt the 4D will be cheap.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

When did you list your BPs? They should have been at the top, as I thought those were by date. I don't want to go thru them all over and over, I want to just see the latest postings.

I think you should save your $100 and post where I am going to see them.

BTW, never mind asking admin how to get around on the site. I am sure that however you word it, the answer will be just what you want it to say.

If I want to buy from JB Birds, I will do it your way. If I am interested in other plants, I will do it my way. But, don't cry if you don't sell many plants. I'll bet you would sell more by doing it my way.

Pawleys Island, SC

Hi Everyone,
It has been a tough week so I haven't been online. I tried lurking one day, but I couldn't do much more. We had a death in the family this past week and a trip to Florence, about 2 hours away took all the strength I could muster and then some. It left me exhausted for a couple of days.
My broken bones are doing better. Not quite as painful unless I put weight on them in the wrong way.( you cannot get yourself to the bath room without putting weight on at least 1 foot! LOL) I'm not waiting till the last minute that is for sure.

Yes JB, I do camellias from cuttings. Jnette, the most cold hardy camellia I have found has been hardy to zone 6 and there aren't many of those. Years ago, I managed a "Landscape Nursery". ( We really only sold shrubs, trees and palms, so I collected as many varieties of camellia and azalea as I could afford) and I met the caretaker for Arcadia ( A Vanderbilt) plantation. He was fascinating when he talked about rooting and grafting camellias. Anyway, the absolutely best time to take cuttings is in june and july. Stick them in potting mix and keep them moist and put a humidity tent over them. Some times they will take as much as 6-8 months to root and they are kind of slow growing shrubs. The ones I rooted about 4 years ago are now almost 3.5 feet tall.
Another method is the forsythe pots. I use a large plastic pot and a small unglazed terra cotta pot with a cork in the drainage hole. Put the small pot inside the center of the large pot and fill the large pot with potting mix and the small with water. Stick the cuttings between the 2 pots and keep the small pot full of water all the time. The water will seep out of the terra cotta pot and keep the medium evenly moist. ( Kind of like a wick system) I also use a humidity tent over these cuttings so that I don't have to worry about misting them. ( this method works on just about any cutting you can do from softwood or semi-hard wood. ( the biggest problem I had was keeping my dog from stealing the cork)
The species I grow are Camellia Japonica ( large leaves and flowers likes shade and bloom in spring) and Camellia Sasanqua ( smaller leaves and flowers, tolerates more sun and usually blooms from October - December.)

Let me know what you are interested in and I will help anyway I can.

Dave what is the pirrahana stuff you soak your daylily seeds in? Don't you put them in the fridge for 3 weeks? When I soak mine, I put them in the fridge in the water and then sow them 3 weeks later. Sometimes they have even germinated in the cold water. Speaking of which, I need to go start some now.

For Passiflora seeds, I soak them in orange, lemon or pineapple juice because the acid helps to break down the germination inhibitors. That may help with some of the other hard seed coat varieties too.

I've been doing alot of genealogy research this week and I think I will get back to it. I need to organize the new info I have found.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday!
Linda

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Katie, I had no clue, since I was not finding it.

I love vines and all things that can climb up or be trained up.

Look here you old biddies, Stop pissing vinegar & crapping salt in wounds. Lets play nicely or I will put you in time out.

Listen you California Housewife,
I did not start this. I am an innocent sweet old lady who just sits here and takes all the heat. I am deeply hurt.............I am bleeding................well, almost. I can not imagine what it would be like if I moved West. I would have to take more xanax to survive the pain and suffering you give me. It is time for my cocktail. I want no more of this. Ta Ta PITA.

Linda, I will contact you privately regarding the camellias. BTW if you added vodka to that orange , lemon and pineapple juice you would have a great drink. Then you would not care if the seeds germinated or not. Why waste the good juice on seeds?

I guess I will leave you all to your misery. Nity Nite.

You guys aren't tough enough to live out here in CA. It is dog eat dog here, everyone fighting to the finish, nobody ever getting there though.

I know Dawn, I've read about how bad it is. If it were me I would give it all back to the Mexicans and let them have at it.

I have a sister that lives there and they get mad when I say that.

mulege, Mexico

I'm about ready to go to bed and see if I can sleep off the last of this cold. I'm feeling better,

I took a couple of books over to neighbor Dana today. She volunteered the information that she and her husband Tom had discussed the matter a lot and have decided that they have to take full responsibility for the safety of their dogs. I did not say "duh" nor did I ask if that meant she was going to return the $50 I had contributed for Amiga;s surgery. Did I not show great restreaint? The funny thing is that I wasn't even tempted to say anything but that I thought that was a good idea. The eight-yr-old dog of a friend of theirs who lives up the hill was killed a couple of days ago by a free-roaming pack of dogs. Amiga is recovering really well from her surgery and came out to bark at me. I think the two attacks have really brought home to them that they are not in Seatle; they're in Mexico and a lot of things are very different here.

Dana told me that a very unpleasant woman who has a trailer just up the hill from me and hasn't been here much (thank goodness) has decided to give up her place here and buy a house in Florida as apparently houses are fairly cheap there now. She will not be missed.

I got my plants fertilized and the yacon watered and the dogs fed. Didn't have any problems with anybody. Ordered a bunch of stuff on eBay for when I get to Ca.

I'm ready for bed.

hugs, katie

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Well, y'all ~ I see everyone is in good fighting spirits! We finally got our power back on and so the catchup has begun. I was hoping to get some seeds started today, but maybe later on this evening. For some reason I am feeling tired, oh yes! I read all of your posts as I was trying to get caught up. Last night it was 24° and today was a high of 42°. At least the winds have died down, though it is still breezy. Quite a bit of storm damage...trees, branches...but at least no major damage. One large branch the size of a medium-size tree hit the side of the roof off the back porch and it will have to be repaired. At least there was nothing going through our roof!

Dave ~ Wow, your greenhouse looks really nice. Is that new, or one you already had? I was going to tell you to be patient with the columbines, but you probably knew that their germination took a while, so good! I will report back once I have started my seeds. I have all the supplies and before the storm started I got those heavy bags up onto the back porch so I would not have to go out in the snow to make a potting mix. I have peat, vermiculte, perlite and bone meal and some orchid mix for the peppers. (I read that online at a pepper forum and I will try it out.) I did get good germination last year but I think they dried out a bit so I lost a lot of seedlings that way. Now I have proper heat mats and a thermostat. I did not want to get all that my first year of seed-sowing. Now I am ready, well at least the equipment is ready anyway! I still have a few other things to do so it might be tomorrow that I actually get started. It would be good to start in the morning instead of just doing a little bit now, but I can get some things ready and mix some soil. I would rather do that now instead of going out in the cold morning.

Are you referring to fresh DL seeds or slightly older ones when you use that germinating booster? I have some old ones that I would like to try that I took from some that I have growing.

Linda ~ I am sorry that you are in such pain. I will send you prayers. Glad you are feeling well enough to join in. I understand as sometimes I can read the posts and then just shut off the computer. Things happen so fast around here that I will get lost if I don't read the posts every few days, but what good does it? I don't remember half of what was discussed or who is growing what? (Oh, well!)

JB aka Innocent and Sweet Old Lady ~ Isn't there a TV show called Jersey Shores? I don't have subscription TV, but I have heard of it. Do you live near the shore? Sorry, I don't have a US map or a map of NJ. Have you lived there all of your life? Too much snow for me....you say you love it there, well, OK...I have had too much while everyone else is in their heatwave. I know, what a whiner! It just happened so suddenly going from 60° to the 30's and 40's during the day....I am sure the plants are whining even louder, only we can't hear them. They can't go inside and build a fire and crawl under the covers, but at least there is some snow cover. My chinese cabbage and broccoli are protected, so far, and the peas and lettuce have not yet come up from being sown about 2 weeks ago. My neighbor had a pine tree snap off at the top, as well many oaks have been severely damaged. Oh, BTW, those arrangements are really lovely!

Katie ~ Are you feeling better yet? You are right about the scarlet runner bean. My grandmother was from Georgia and she used to talk about them a lot. I suppose they grow well there and are beautiful as well. I just read about them that the soldiers used to grow them (during the 2nd WW) as they were good to eat and beautiful too. We all need plants to cheer us up, right? I will have to try the split pea soup your way as the canned stuff is not as good as freshly made. And yours sounds even better!

Dawn ~ Are you better too? It is no fun being sick, ever. So please get well, OK? It took me long enough...LOL!! I was on antibiotics for 10 days and I hope that will be enough. Did your area get any rain out of this storm?

Lee ~ Yes, JB is right. Better to have a dog that loves the cold weather. Our old black lab (when he was alive) loved the snow. He thought he was taking dust baths when he was really making snow angels. He was an angel too, except when he dug up this one hosta over and over. Poor thing did not have a chance against him. Hopefully yours won't want to dig up your plants. Still since he is young, you could train him to dig holes for your planting on command. Have you heard of the Digging Dog Nursery? Maybe they have a stategy.

Sharon ~ I guess that your area escaped the storm, huh? That is good. Do you get snow there during the winter or is it warm all year and then hot in the summer?

Dee ~ Sorry my answer was so short but my power was out and the battery was low. We live about 20 mountain miles southeast of Placerville which is between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento.

Randy ~ Yes, welcome to our weird and wonderful little corner of DG who each in their own way grows something different from one another, but a few things we do share in common. We have a tendency to ramble on a bit from time to time, and with more people coming on board you may have to get a second computer to keep up, LOL! What kinds of plants do you like to grow and what is your growing climate? We have all sorts here, I suppose you have gathered already. And what has your weather been like lately?

Well, I must go now. Take care everyone. Here is a picture of the branch that damaged the roof....

Linda, I am so sorry for your family member loss. I hope your broken bones are healing quickly. I need you to be on your best. I need someone to go with me to kick JB and Jnette into "Spring".

I could not believe the national news was talking about another storm heading JB's way.

Evelyn, this year we have been down to 21 degrees which is low for us. We usually do not freeze. We have had snow three times in the last 10 years. Our part of Las Vegas is close to the west mountains. We are at 3200 and snow is usually above 3500. We got snow a few months ago, I think. Our biggest problem is "high" winds. We have very little humidity and when we have winds blowing all February and March, everything just dries out. And when the roses and irises burst into full bloom, then we have high winds for about 4 days just to destroy all the blooms.

I watched the end of the Daytona 500. It was great fun. 20 year old, 2nd major race, wins Daytona. That was fun to watch. I did laundry, cleaned out drawers and started on de-cluttering boxes on the dining room table.
This is our snow storm a few months ago.

I am really tired and am going to hit the bed early. Later friends, Sharon.

I have irrigation repair men coming tomorrow and my two laborers.

The Marketplace works a lot like eBay' (except it doesn't have an auction component) - people generally visit it to look for a particular item, not for a seller. The best way for someone to find your items is to send them the link to your Marketplace listings from your member page.

The above is Terry's comment on how to get around the Market Place. Enjoy your trip.
I am not sure I agree with her because eBay has the Store Section where you look for your store to shop for whatever. Oh well. What the H.

Now, Jen , sweet adorable sweet kind, Jen, it is Monday Morning. George Washington's Birthday aka Presidents Day and I am just getting ready to walk. Before I go I wanted to say
Good Morning Glory and I hope your day is full of fun and games. See how nice I am being today. The worst is yet to come. LOL Later girlfriend.

It snowed overnight and now it is back to the boots and all that winter gear. I told my son in law not to put the snow shovel in the barn but he did not listen and so it snowed. The Amish had it just about right, they predicted 26 snow incidents because the first day it snowed this winter was the 26th of Dec. I think, anyhow, today is No. 25 and that means the snow we are to have tomorrow will be 26 and the END IS NEAR. The onion snow does not count.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

OMG, JB, you are in trouble. I am sure George Washington would be a Republican and that is not good in PITA's book. LOL.

I did not sleep with a darn. I was so tired I went right to sleep, Vern woke me when he came to bed with his snoring around 1am and I could no go back to sleep. I just got out of the shower and I am dressed and hair in rollers. The workers should be here any moment.

12 cab drivers and three passengers were murdered in Acapulco by drug people. Some were be-headed and other whacked up and body parts scattered. I wonder what message they are trying to get across? Big international tennis tournament coming up this week. Mexican government said nothing to worry about, the government will protect the tennis players and personnel.

You all have a great day and be warm and safe.

Anyone know this plant. Usually totally purple like the tips.. Lived through 21 degrees.
