Blooms 2011

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Niiiccceeee picture drthor, , what an amazing amount of daffodils. How long have they been in?

Lafayette, IN(Zone 5a)

ooohhhh! nice! can't wait to see those kind of blooms here!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I had daffodil bulbs every yard. I have been in this garden for 5 years.
My bulbs are multipling for sure.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Nice daffodils. Send some down this way!! We never see them except in pots in the supermarket. Nothing like the hundreds in your flower bed. Beautiful

Lafayette, IN(Zone 5a)

This is the closest I have to a bloom so far......they certainly are trying to open! If we had a little warmer temps and some sunshine, they would be blooming like crazy!

What a pretty crocus.

Lafayette, IN(Zone 5a)

Thanks Cem9165! I planted 50 more last fall so I hope they all bloom and multiply quickly! I will be posting photos when they do bloom!

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Looking forward to seeing them. Are they all the same color?

Lafayette, IN(Zone 5a)

No, they are different colors. This one is the first one to bloom every year. I have yellow, purple, blue, white and the cream color.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Nice selection.

More Ranunculus flowers in Ft Lauderdale this morning

Oh, I love Ranunculus. I have tried to grow them so many times but it never works for me. But the flowers are just stunning.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Jon, what beautiful flowers!!!! How long do the flowers last?

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks. Whether left outside or cut for bouquets the flowers usually last a week to ten days. If last year was any indication they should continue to produce blooms through the end of April and then start dying back in May when our weather turns much more tropical.

These are "Mache Mix" Ranunculus blooming in a container right now. The difference is these are grown from seed and the "Tecolote" Ranunculus, in the last photo, are grown from bulbs. Bloom size is slightly smaller and both take about 90 days to produce blooms. The seed grown Ranunculus are much shorter plants at 6-10". Last year I grew a different seed grown variety named "Bloomingdale" Ranunculus. The two seed grown varieties are so similar, but I do think last years "Bloomingdale" plants grew better and had fuller foliage.

Very pretty!
So you grow the seed-grown varieties as annuals, Jon? Like nyr, I have tried to grow them and failed. Not that the bulbs didn't grow and bloom, they won't return here. For the price and short season of bloom it's just not worth it to me. Seeds would be much cheaper and might be worth the effort if they bloom long enough...Sorta like the poppies I love. Where do you purchase your seeds?

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Bev. Yes, I grow the seed varieties as annuals. I purchased the Ranunculus seeds from Hazzards Greenhouse. There are many more online companies selling Ranunculus seeds this year (Park Seed, Stokes Seed, Outside Pride, Lavieenrosegardens, Plants Of Distinction).

The bulbs are listed as hardy to Zones 8 and higher. I was concerned last years bulbs might rot during our summer rainy season. After the foliage died I remove them in June, stored them in the house and then separated and replanted in October. The majority of them have returned and produced this year. I think they do well here because our weather from Oct-April is consistently mild and dry. They don't do well in heat, so the 6 straight months of mild/warm temperatures emulates the Southern California conditions that they grow very well in.

Here's a picture if today's first spring Amaryllis bloom in the yard.

Wonderful! We are months from Amaryllis blooms.

Thanks for the info:) I'll have to check that out. Wonder how the Ranuculus would do wintersown? ..Ahhh! So many new things to learn. One day I'll retire and then....probably a pipe dream, lol!

Yeah, I always say that I'll dig my tender bulbs and things, but I know how busy I am during all but the summer months. It won't happen. Then I have to add guilt to my list as well.

Keep posting those beautiful pictures...

One more Yellow Snow Crocus....it's a little different than the first as the outer petals are a lighter yellow...almost white color.

One clump of iris reticulata has big buds (maroon color....I think the name is George) and should bloom within the next couple of days......these little guys are one of my favorite!

Irisluvr, nice pictures of the crocus and I can't wait to see your reticulata bloom. I got home this evening after being gone a week and the blooms have exploded here with the daffodils and tulips. I'll be taking lots of pictures tomorrow and posting some of them. Annette

Lafayette, IN(Zone 5a)

Thanks Cem! I am anxiously awaiting to see your pictures! Will have lots more blooms within the next couple of weeks so I will be posting more!

Here's the yard now. I'll post picture of the front of the house first. These around the mailbox.

Left side of the front yard. The pink tulips are Pink Impression, around the cherry trees that aren't blooming yet and the yellow tulips in the front bed to the left are Sancere tulips. In the right bed close to the house are the Narcissus Cassata behind the pansies, and to the right of them the Yellow Trumpet daffodils.

Tete-a-Tete is my favorite daffodil! I guess because they are one of the first to bloom and they are so little!

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

It's been blooming for several weeks. I really like the petite blooms.

Lafayette, IN(Zone 5a)

warmer temps today + sunshine = blooms! Iris Reticulata "George" finally made an appearance!
