Omoshiro, part 2: the waiting

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Angelonia is very nice. Forget me nots are so sweet. They self-seed for many people.

Which clematis did you buy from Bluestone and which ones from Brushwood? I'm sure you've already told us but I put in a long day in the garden (more than 8 hours) and I'm weary.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Hi Pirl, I am glad you where able to work all day outside. I have ordered Sunset, Gipsy Qeen and Niobe from Brushwood. I think I told them to deliver late April. I my have to order a real blue clematis for my all american trellis, the one I ordered is to purple. Do you have any favorite blue that you can recomend? I will plant one of the pink ones next to my white flowering Ladybanks rose, it is blooming for the first time. From Bluestone I ordered Arctic queen, Rebecca, and Crystal fountain. I also got from them 3 bushes of Goats beard, for the shade in back. I will be having a jungle soon. Got 6 Verbascum , nice little dark red, burgondy flowers for the front. So , Bluestone made some money from me, but when I heard my kids spend $250 for cigarets a month, I am better of.

Ouch! Glad I quit! Makes me wonder what my daughter spends on it - she does know though, we have had those health discussions. What is ironic is she is a very big part of the reason both DH and I quit so many years ago.

Kiseta - I will have to get through my Bluestone catalog. I did not know they had the darker colors of the verbascum. I have been looking and all I have been able to find are the yellow and white. I appreciate the heads up on the verbascum.

Good morning Carolyn, the 250 is tax free because they are in military, I can imagine how much is in the store. It breaks my heart to watch them smoke when I go there. But they are grown up, nothing I can do.
About the verbascu, it soposed to be nice plant, I can hardly wait to figure it out where to plant it. I have three lg flower pots, maybe use one for the tall part of the pot, and put some million bells petunias around it.

Kiseta - Crystal Fountain is a light blue. What kind of blue do you want? Most blues do lean towards purple and none are a true navy - none that I know of anyhow.

Are the Goatsbeard the tall ones or the short ones? I don't have the tall but adore the little one - it's so well behaved!

The verbascum sound nice. Now you'll have me checking their catalog! Seems both Carolyn and I will be looking for them, thanks to you.

Did you both see the bloom of the day?

Good morning Pirl, the verbascum comes in 3 pack, and they look pretty healthy. This morning I am going to see any signs of those pesky grasshoppers, I hope I get to get rid of them when they are very small. I will take picture of my Lanybank rose, it is beutiful. Last night we played Mexican train dominoes, bunch of old ladies, but beats seating home. It is lots of clean fun, plus we ate together. Have a nice day, it will be in the 80s here, good for the golfers.

About the Goats beard, I checked, I have the little shorter one , about 4 ' tall, but that is what I wanted, are they easy to take care of?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Etelka. My little one is about a foot tall.

This is my lady rose, I will put one of my pink clematis next to it, hopefully it will work. In front of it I will plant some salvia and some annuals for the different color. This is a sad time for my garden because I have to start taking up the pansies, they kind of looke legy, it is getting to warm for them. The nice ones I save in flower pots, just to get some more goody out of them for a few more weeks.

Very nice. I love the fence and the pink clematis will look so pretty with the rose.

Pansies just don't love hot weather.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

That fence used to be my gate, but one day when I looked at my little garden there, some one left a car tire mark right on my flowers. I got so mad, I went to the store and bought me a 4 x 4x8 posts, learned in the hurry how to use a post hole digger and put the fence in so my "good neighbor wont use that as her exit way. Then she had a nerv to ask me when she was moving "are you going to miss me" , NOT The Owner of the house had to put thousands of dollars to fix the house after her. The owner asked me if I can talk to my friens about the house to help her rent it. I told her that my friends think I am crazy to live here. If I could just put my house on wheeles and take it out to the country. I rather fight deer then neighbors.

It's very rough when neighbors are difficult and worse if they don't keep up with their property.

There are some oddball people around here but they do keep their properties in great shape. As long as I don't have to deal with the strange people it's fine with me. They may think of me as strange for all I know.

Pirl, Congratulations on your Bloom Of The Day photo from yesterday! That is a beautiful pix of Omoshiro!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, mattsmom. The photo makes me look like a photographer but it's really the beauty of the blooms that shines.

I have finnaly got my Brushwood order. Today I have been preparing the planting site, and tomorow will plant all 6 of the clematis. I will folow your direction Pirl, but my compost pile still not finished but it is looking good. I think the oak leave does not rot so easy, I can still see them in the pile.None of my clematis have any buds, should I pinch of the top of the vine, to make them bushier?? I finnaly got rested from all that work, I think next year I will go pool side instead of working. Getting to old for the rat race.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oak leaves do take a long time to decay, Etelka. Do not use compost if it's not ready. Just buy a bag of aged compost and use that until yours is ready. You can mix it with aged manure and use it for the planting hole (don't forget the bone meal) as well as for mulch.

Yes, you certainly can pinch the top to help it branch out more. Good luck and please keep us posted with photos.

I ordered Omoshiro from Klehm's this spring, and it was backordered, but arrived yesterday! I have been making arches out of branches and grapevines over some kind of support. It doesn't last forever, but there is always more branches and grapevine to add to the "construction".

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We would love to see it when you finish.

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

Oh, it is "finished" for this year and I have a photo I will post of last years blooms. Not Omoshiro yet, but another one I always forget the name of.

Posted a photo in a new thread titled Clematis Country Arch.
