After The Freezes, Snow, and Ice

How long have you had your asparagus before it started producing spears?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We got ours from Dennis at the swap in the fall.

They say you should start harvesting from 'nursery grown crowns' after 3 years. I'm sure we cheated a few times the first 3 years ;0) The older they get the more you can harvest without setting them back in terms of growth.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

Glad to hear that they are doing well for you, Stephanie. How are the blackberries?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

They're hanging in there, Dennis! I haven't really checked on them lately. LOL

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

My blackberries are doing great. Lots of new branches.
Last week I went to the Lowe's on 183 in Irving and they had a 75% sale on one gallon berries = $2.50
I bought: 6 blackberries, 2 rasperries, 4 blueberries.
I was worried that they were on sale because they were dead .. instead they are shooting green buds already all over.
... I don't even need them ... I just couldn't pass the deal.
:

Awesome!!!! I promised the family I would get blueberries in this year. Thanks!

Dennis, when you dug up your asparagus, did you get a look at the crowns? Just curious how they grow over time.

Well Planted my Rocky Mountain Huckleberries 3 days ago after they were in the fridge for 2 months. Lets hope they germinate and give me nice Huckleberry bushes.

Although some of the hellebore leaves were damaged in the big freeze, it didn't affect the flowers

Beautiful, Anna! I love the show on the saucer magnolia, wowzers! Mine is setting bud, not that many buds in fact. It's been acting goofy for the fast few years (sometimes blooming in the fall) just happy it's alive :0)

Love your SMag Anna! Beautiful home too.

Sheila, love your style.

I too am a crammer gardner, see it, want it, gotta have it. Buy it, beg it, trade for it, plant it, pray over it.

I think your ditch lily look great with the phlox. I have some of the old double orange and try to move them around down by the ponds. They look great naturalized in with the purples and blues.

Looking out my windows for freeze damage this morning. 28 right now, but the buds on the redbuds are looking alright. The roses look puny. Supposed to get to 60 again this afternoon. Hurry REAL spring.

Thanks Sharon....now don't post pics like that and not explain!! Pet fox??

Gainesville, TX

I live in a wild Disney Land..in the woods and we have possum, skunk, racoon , armadillo, and 4 fox this year that come to our back porch area. The fox are usually very skiddish, but this year they seem almost tame as you can see from the proximity to this wild cat that wandered up freezing and starving this winter. She definitely won't allow petting but we have been providing her with food and bedding on the porch. Looks like we may soon have 6 or 8 more. Across the pond are in the mornings it is not unusual to see as many as 10 deer crossing and an occasional coyote. The coyotes are big and healthy here some as big as full grown german shepards.

The Fox and the cat are just adorable, but the cat doesn't look wild to me. You must have a lot of fun!!!

domesticated cat that has never had human contact

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

What a great picture! Is that fox thinking about a cat snack?

Gainesville, TX

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Cute Sharon! How fun to have all of those come around.

I don't think I have ever felt more blessed...........24 this morning for a few hours and after careful inspections I don't think I have any damage. I pulled weeds and trimmed more crepe myrtles again this afternoon. Everything is beginning to look really good!

beautiful view you have. I would be sitting there with my laptop having coffee every morning!

Love those photos, Sharon! I've only seen one fox out here. He was eating pears off the ground :0)

I took this pic of a Red Fox with kits a few years back in a neighbors backyard. Junior stole something out of the garden and was trying to make a break for it! Momma was trying to lead the way but junior had a different idea and as you can see they did not see Eye to Eye!

Sheila, that's exactly where I am right now....looking so forward to when itis green again...the pond below the ridge will bloom with tall yellow iris all around in April

Gainesville, TX

perky, I have seen the fox together with their mates but never yet with the kits...great photo

Awww, too cute, Perkos, too cute!

Found roses beginning to bud. This is the earliest I can recall. While we got more snow then I could have ever imagined. We seemed to miss out on most of the hard freezes that ya'll got to the west. It's usually the other way around.

One of my wood violets bloomed yesterday! Woohoo!

Cypress, TX

Getting ready to plant some Texas Bluebonnet plants I picked up Monday along with some seeds--hoping for some blooms on the plants this year and hopefully next year they will come back along with the seeds. Anyone have success with bluebonnets or suggestions on how to care for them?

Brady, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I've had success without doing anything except planting a couple of small plants (from WallyWorld) 3-4 years ago and leaving them alone, letting them reseed and spread, which they did -- a lot. Watched part of a special program on Austin PBS station last night about TX wildflowers; wish I could afford the DVD to watch it over and over. Great pictures, but could've used a small label on each shot identifying the wildflower.
