After The Freezes, Snow, and Ice

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The 'georgia blue' speedwell didn't miss a beat. Since they are evergreen they did fine with just a covering of leaves. Now they are doing their thing!

Glenna, I've seen some hoppers too! At first I thought, naw, I must be seeing things. I think, It's been about 6 years since I put out nolo bait... I might invest in some this year, just to be safe.

Sheila, are those dayliles among the phlox? Do yours bloom at the same time?
I lost some plants around the phlox last year, and wondering what I might replace them with.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, the Rose of Sharon sapling you gave me a few years ago is the first of my RoS's to bud out this year. :-) And the Brazos Penstemmon from Josephine emerged a few weeks ago. At this time of year, every day brings a new discovery.

Yes, it is nice to see things coming up.

coco....those are the old ditch lilies and I need to dig them. Forget every year until they start blooming ...yes at the same time, and ugly colors together! LOL! But then there is the blackeyed susans...so they may be the ones out of place. LOL! I am a crammer, not a planner when it comes to gardening.

I like it!!!
It's a plus that I have more ditch lilies then I know what to do with.lol So together they'll go.

Very pretty view, Sheila!

I hope my toads survived, won't know for a while since too much shade in that area.
I bet the peonies will really put on a show this year after all of the ice and snow we had.

Happy to see my Groundsel putting on buds.

Columbines are putting out a lot of new leaves.

I have Brazos Penstemons all over the beds just beginning to send up stems.
Lyreleaf sage is also green and thriving.

West Tx mistflower is putting out new growth where I cut back all the dead freeze damage.

I treated myself to a Saucer Magnolia tree last year and this will be it's first year to bloom. Sure hope we don't have a late freeze.
Also in that bed covered with leaves is Georgia Blue speedwell, and three or four varieties of hucheria (sp) that still have leaves, they did well. Some small rue plants there are putting out new leaves, ready for the Black Swallowtails.

My Oak Leaf Hydrangea bushes are sending out leaves also. I cut them back every year since they love it. They grow so fast it won't be long before they fill out.

Last one is my Bronze fennel. I raised numerous Black Swallowtails on it last year. It's first shoots were nipped with the freeze, but it is rebounding nicely. It got over 4 foot tall last year.

I love seeing all the new growth, blooms can't be too far behind. All the trees are beginning to bloom. Will try and get some pics downloaded.
So far I haven't found or thought of anything that might have died. I thought I was going to need a moment of silence for lespedeza thunbergii, It's always been evergreen. However plantfiles says it can dye to the ground it colder climates. Still hope :0)

Maybe I need to go cut back all my dead growth from last year! LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, that might help Steph..LOL! At least it would allow more sun to warm them up.

Don't know if I'm lazy or a procrastinator, but I don't trim off/back old growth until I see new growth. Come on plants, show me something! :-)

drthor-just planted my first peonie this season. LOVE the flowers and was so excited to see bulbls in the store. Any pointers on how to get these babies to grow? I have seen a lot of people say they cant seem to grow them in Texas. I am in Houston BTW. Do they need part shade?

Advice anyone?

There use to be a guy on the bulb forum. I think he was in Ft. Worth and experimented and collected a lot peonies...I can't think of his name, but he didn't post in the Texas forum much. Sorry, I'm not much help.lol If I can remember more I'll let you know.

Got a few more pics. A favorite sight, for me and the cows. Grass!

I can't remember what these white bloomer are, east Texas is lousy with them :0) I love the way it looks like I planted them spaced out..I didn't.

Last pic, thought this was funny. Oldest son hasn't played with tractor in years, too old. We joke that it is 'on blocks' in the front yard. truly texan ;0)
Seems it got parked on a clump of daffs that managed to find a way up.

chelineboston, I took a class a while ago on growing peonies in TX.
The speaker called the peonies "cemetery plants" because he said that they grow if you neglet them. So I did.
Full sun and away from shrubs and trees. They will get nasty in the heat of the summer, so do not plant them by the front door.
I think this year I will have a show of flowers, because of the cold weather.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Those are great pictures Lynea, I wonder if they are wild plum? Josephine would know I am sure. Love the tractor picture!
Smockette told me once that if you had freezes you might get blooms. But in the south some people have to put ice around the roots in cold weather to get blooms. I have had a couple plants for several years and only twice seen blooms on one plant; it is in only afternoon shade. Also one of the years it bloomed, the buds opened slightly, then a week of rain ruined them. They are not something I would buy or worry with here in TX.

Peonies do very well here, but they need full sun.

They are soooo pretty, I have a desktop picture, a bouquet of peonies and green apples, its so refreshing :0)

I remembered the name of the collector SteveFtWorth. Haven't seen recent posts but he's still a subscriber.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We have asparagus up, too! Not enough to harvest, but we still have about 4 or 5 shoots.
