I have a bunch of perennials that need dividing. I also have cabin fever and I am dying to get my hands in some dirt. I will be dividing coreopsis, nepeta, shasta daisys, baptisia, and siberian iris. 10 day forecast shows daily high temps remaining in the 50's and 60's but here in KY we could also get a foot of snow in march. Is it OK to go ahead and get started on this?
Spring fever in KY, can I start dividing?
It is so hard to wait, but is your ground warming up? I'm a zone above you and I wait until April. Are the plants showing new growth?
No signs of new growth yet. Is it important that I wait until they are actively growing?
New growth signals warming soil. Others may disagree, but that is what I use to say it is time to divide.
I'd wait until you're closer to your last frost date, otherwise you may get a cold snap before the newly divided plants have a chance to settle in and get their roots going. Plants that aren't well established are often more susceptible to cold damage.
Thanks ecrane, that's what I was trying to say, my brain just wouldn't produce today.
