Daily Bird Pics. Vol. 381

Lakeview, OH

I have yet to get a Pileated, I think it is because the suet cage is just the original one, it is not on a board or anything that he can rest his tail on. They are rather large. I haven't seen another one since that one I followed down the street. Since it is getting warmer, maybe I can get out and find him again, even if I don't get him to get to the yard, at least I can get a picture of him to put on the lifer list. I have a House Sparrow that comes every day, and the Cardinals too, but not as often when it is not so cold. Hopefully it continues to get warmer, I will hate to lose the winter birds, they are so pretty.

Hi everyone:
I'm just popping in from the frozen Zone 6 .
I hope to see some bird migrations. Anything to give me hope that spring is comming.
We usually get migrating Robins the first week of March.
I have heard Titmice songs and Cardinal mating songs so there is hope.

South Hamilton, MA

Our birds haven't started spring singing. Too cold perhaps? They may start soon as it is supposed to get warmer this week.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Yesterday I saw a few flocks of robins while I was out driving!

I am counting the hours until I see 40*

We have Robins that dont migrate. They live near the lake and come to eat the small fermented purple plums on the neighbors tree.

Rose! A Harris Sparrow? How cool!!! Great shots. Congrats on the flicker too!
Duc, absolutely stunning photos of such cool birds. You're such a pro.
Nanny, Oh Queen of Woodpeckers, congrats on the dynamic duo.
Burn, really nice redpoll.
Teddy, congrats on the house finch.
GP, sweet cardinal. I love the subtle colors of the females.
VA_Wild_Rose, stunning shots! Beautiful series.

I got a few lifers yesterday and saw some other birds that are not common in this area. This is a bird that I had never seen in Texas before, a Black-headed Grosbeak.

This couple's yard had tons of hummer's favorite plants. Despite an elaborate system to save the plants from the freeze, most froze. They have feeders all over though and four kinds of hummers that are not common here -- Anna's, Allen's, Rufous and Broad-tailed. I'm so jealous! Saw them all but didn't get good pics of all of them.

Here's the Anna's probably cropped too much.

I found the perfect hot sauce to repel squirrels, it is called Screaming Sphincter, and it works, I took a cotton ball and the sauce and put it on the suet cage and the squirrels have not touched it since. I think when my hubby goes to play Euchre I am going to bring the suet cage in and coat it in it. They seem to avoid it, this summer I am going to find the no-melt pepper suet and see if I can keep the wp coming to my yard, it would be nice to be able to sit outside and have the rb wp come and eat while I am out there. It would be one of the highlights of my summer and of course when our little hummers come back. I miss them so much. This fellow stopped by again today.

I have heard of Cayenne pepper in bird seed.
I am at the end of the Trailmix bag and vowed to end feeding it because the squirrls get most of it.I need to remember cayenne if I fill feeders again

I think there is something wrong with this bird, I was outside cleaning off the sidewalk(finally) and it would not fly, I got closer and it still wouldn't fly. Do you think there is something wrong with it?

He looks a bit puffed up in the first photo. Let us know if you see him fly off.

Lakeview, OH

So far he is still out there, is there anything I can do, don't want the cat to get him, but don't want to bring him in if he is sick.

So many great pix, and a few new people visitors, too. 57 posts, I'm late. Got a new laptop and am using it to type this.

it is not as easy as my desktop.

I have a few to share, gonna try it with this laptop.

Here's one of my many Goldfinches.

He can fly, not very well, but he can fly, I guess he just likes eating on the ground. I finally got all the ice off the boardwalk as you can see, the next picture is all the ice that was ON the boardwalk.

More ice on the other side of the boardwalk. We had about 3-4 inches of ice on the boardwalk. There is still a lot of ice on the streets, I hope this warm weather helps melt it.

Not that many birds here today, I guess since it has gotten warmer they are finding other stuff to eat, the feeder is just about empty but there are seeds on the ground, when they get rid of them I will fill up the feeder. And besides if it stays warmer they will find other food elsewhere. Still have the suet feeder up, I don't think it is that warm yet, that I have to be worried about that.

Nice variety Hack!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Not a lot of birds here today either. Both the Pileateds came by today. We had a nice warm up today and lots of melting going on. The driveway is now half cleared of ice...only took 2 weeks!! lol

Enjoyed all the pics today!!

I don't know if anyone else lives where they have Barred Owls around, but ours have been very active the in the very early mornings the past few days. A lot of the "monkey, Amazon Jungle" calls. Which indicates mating time or seeking out mates. They scared our new dog so bad he came right back in without going potty!! LOL

Not so great pic of a Cardinal & 2 Blue Jays!

Oh I would love to hear that nanny.

Ha. Gus is a chicken!

I've been hearing the cardinals calling a bit. VERY glad to year.
