Hollyhock buds turning yellow??

Miami, FL(Zone 10b)

Hi, I have a pink hollyhock plant that is about 4 feet tall right now and about 2 weeks ago it started to get buds and I've already seen 2 of them go from green to yellow then fall off. Why could this be happening? What should I do?

Hollyhocks are one of my favorite plants for back of borders, they like well rotted manure at their roots (hungry feeders) the manure helps with moisture at the roots also, as for the yellowing buds, perhaps you can scrape away some soil at the base of the plant to make sure the soil is not over dry, if bone dry, give a good soak, I would add a handful of multi purpose plant feed around the soil area to get it off to a good start. They are are normally an easy plant to grow IF conditions are right, but they are well known for deceases like powdery mildew, rust on the leaves etc, BUT these deceases don't normally kill off the plants, just not as nice to look at. hope this helps you out. Good Luck. WeeNel.

Sounds like you have a Vietnamese Hollyhock, since mine are budding and flowering now also. Mine is in South Florida sandy soil with lots of compost and some peat moss mixed in. It seems to really like being in soil that remains consistently damp. I do have one in a large pot that does drop some buds. I assume its because the pot dries out a bit too much. Hopefully you're just losing a couple of buds and the issue corrects itself.
