Wilmington,NC...My lettuce seeds have sprouted, have ?'s

Wilmington, NC, United States

i planted my lettuce on jan 23 along with a couple of flower seeds. All of my lettuce has sprouted, there are about 4-6 sprouts in each cup. At what point do i take them from under the grow light? and when should they go into my garden? Also, my flower seeds have not sprouted. Should i try to start them over or wait a little longer?

I've never done anything but direct seed lettucey things, so I'll be interested to see the answers.
How tall are the sprouts?
I think the flower gemination could be an "it depends" thing :). Some seeds take a long time to germintae, and some need specific conditions. I think I'd wait a bit, it hasn't been very long in seed time.

I've asked myself that same question many times, and still haven't given myself the answer!

I keep my fluorescent tubes on for 16 hours each day. They are suspended so they are barely above, but not actually touching the leaves. They are on chains, so I can keep making them higher as the seedlings grow.

Sorry can't answer your queston about lettuce and flowers :(

I don't know what's the "right" way to do the lights, but I'm with Honeybee, I turn mine off for at least eight hours. I figure that the little plants don't get 24/7 light in the "real" world, so maybe they can use the rest. I seem to recall getting that info over in the Tomato Forum, as those were the seeds I started most often.
I have read that the heat mat is mostly to help with germination, but again, I'm not positive. I don't think it will hurt, but don't know of there's any benefit. If they get used to lots of heat, will they have more trouble hardening off before going out into the world? I don;t know, but I turn it off when they sprout.
