Hi everyone!! This is going to be my first year to have a garden! I must say I am really nervous but my kids want one really bad! I have the perfect spot where no dogs or animals can get and plan to get it torn up next month! My kids and I have been going through all of the seed catalogs and they have picked out there favorites but I could not belive the prices that these people wanted. It may be average but there is no way I can afford it! Do any of you know a good place to by seed at a reasonable price? Or does anyone have extras that they would trade me for english bluebell and grape hyacinth bulbs? I also have some italian arum if anyone wants some but it spreads like crazy!!
Thanks a million!!
New and have questions!
I've gotten a tremendous number of seeds in trades, but I primarily have used gardenweb for that purpose. There are also a lot of people that will send you free seeds if you send them the postage. What are you looking to buy, and what catalogs are you looking at? When I first started gardening, I got overly ambitious and overbought. Generally, in a small garden, you wouldn't use an entire seed packet for most stuff.
First- welcome.
Second- you need to tell us where you are. This is a big world and a lot of what we can tell you will differ depending on where you are.
Third- It takes more time to weed than do anything else in a garden.
Fourth Theres nothing to be scared of. seeds are pretty forgiving tossing them on the ground will get some of them to grow. I have chives that are growing where they are because I spilled the seed. I've had tomatoes grow where some of last years tomatoes rotted and we've al had things grow from compost pies from thinks that we threw away.
I've seen Burpees seeds in Lowe's during the spring. (Haven't been there recently, so don't know if you'll find them at your own Lowe's)
I've had bad luck with seeds from W-mart!
Fedco has inexpensive seed.
They don't always have them, of course, and they aren't exactly fresh, of course, but I've found seed packets at the Dollar Stores for prices like 2/$1.00.
For my mail order seeds, I buy from Jung Seed Company. I have found that they have good quality seeds, and their prices are much more reasonable than some other companies. Another mail order seed company I do business with is RH Shumway. Again, I have found their seeds to be good, and the prices reasonable.
You should try Pinetree Seeds ,on line its superseeds.com.The packages are small but very inexpensive,so you can try some different varieties. They are very helpful and the seeds are good quality. This is one of my favorites
Thank you all for your help!! I am in zone 8 so pretty much anything grows!

I get tons of great deals on seeds from certain sellers on ebay. I have plenty I could share with you, just send me a dmail. If you get more seeds than you need, wrap them well and seal in mylar or dark wrapping , put into fridge for up to 5-7 years or put in freezer for up to at least 20 years.
If anyone needs info on the ebay sellers, dmail me with what you are looking for and I can tell you who is good.
Cherry Gal sells small amounts of seeds and is reasonably priced. http://www.cherrygal.com/gardenheirlooms-c-12.html Also, if you go visit the Seed Trading forum here at DG, you'll find folks willing to help you out, I'm sure.
Thanks guys, I would not be able to have a garden if it was not for you all!!
