how to grow chives

Pulaski, GA

Has anybody grown chives? I was given a packet of chive seeds. I sprinkled them on a tray of potting mix. They sprouted, but now they don't look very robust.

Any ideas?

Just give them some time. I've grown chives for years, and in my experience they may look a bit straggly when they first come up, but should fill out over time. The other thing I've found that they need lots of water, unlike a lot of other herbs. Also, lots of sunlight. Hope that helps.

When they first start the are very fine. I agree with light, water and time.

I have some outside that are several years old thar I have to move. They are where they are as a result of dropping an open seed pack and spilling the seed.

For several weeks these seedlings will look like blades of grass, they need covered with a little sifted soil and this will allow them to put on more growth, done put heavy soil over them just enough to cover any bare seedlings that are on TOP of the soil, when you go to put them either into pots or into the garden, don't prick out individual plants use a spoon to scoop out several plants, Put these into a new filled pot or into the garden. My bunches of Chives need lifted and split up ever four or five years or they begin to die off in the middle of the clumps, you can give half away at this stage, to get strong plants, don't let them flower the first year, just remove the flower buds as you see them, good luck.
